In recognition of the importance of effective advisory programs at the middle school level, this monograph provides specific suggestions for organizing and sustaining a teacher advisory program and presents sample activities to assist program implementation. Following introductory remarks, the first section reviews aspects of early adolescent development which make an effective advisory program essential, while the second section suggests key elements of programs at this level, including work with students' physical, moral, social/emotional, and career development. Section 3 examines the roles of advisors, counselors, administrators, community members, and students in the whole advisory endeavor, while section 4 reviews important characteristics of advisors. The fifth section provides specific suggestions for developing advisory skills, including asking open instead of closed questions, restating student comments to elicit more information, and using silence. The next two sections describe and suggest sources for successful activities that build relationships, including dealing with personal concerns of students, assisting with instructional difficulties, helping students with school regulations and procedures, and exploring career options. This study was designed to analyze the results of an anonymous survey given to students and staff at Liberty North High School. The purpose of the study and the survey was to determine the perceived effectiveness on the advisory program in the school by both teachers and students. Chi square was used to analyze the 125 surveys collected to test the statistical dependence of the research questions posed in the surveys in regards to awareness of the purpose of the program, connectedness to advisor/advisee, opinion on time and topics covered in the program and whether or not the topics and lessons are actually carried through in particular advisory. The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.

The book describes two similar and successful models of youth mentoring used by two acclaimed urban high schools that have consistently achieved exceptional graduation rates. Providing a detailed description of their methods – based upon extensive observation, and interviews with teachers, students, administrators, and parents – this book makes a major contribution to the debate on how to reduce the achievement gap.Using similar teacher-as-youth mentor and youth advising models, these two inner city schools – Fenway High School in Boston, Massachusetts; and the Kedma School in Jerusalem – have broken the cycle of failure for the student populations they serve—children from underrepresented groups living in poverty in troubled neighborhoods with few resources. Students in both schools have excelled academically, rarely dropout, and progress to college in significant numbers (Fenway has 90% graduation rate, with 95% of graduates going on to college.
