Nuova; or, The New Bee

Nuova; or, The New Bee PDF Author: Vernon L. Kellogg
Publisher: Good Press
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 101

Book Description
In "Nuova; or, The New Bee" by Vernon L. Kellogg, the reader is immersed in a captivating story that combines elements of romanticism and science fiction. Set in a futuristic world where bees have disappeared and a new genetically modified bee species emerges, the book explores themes of environmentalism, technology, and the potential consequences of human intervention in nature. Kellogg's writing style is both descriptive and thought-provoking, as he skillfully weaves together scientific principles with a narrative that challenges the reader's perceptions of the natural world. The literary context of the book is rooted in the early 20th century, a time of great scientific advancements and growing concerns about the impact of human activity on the environment. Vernon L. Kellogg, a renowned entomologist and science writer, drew inspiration from his own research and observations of insect behavior to create "Nuova; or, The New Bee." His deep knowledge of entomology and passion for environmental conservation are evident throughout the book, as he uses fiction as a medium to raise awareness about the importance of bees in maintaining ecological balance. Kellogg's unique background lends credibility to the scientific elements of the story, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. I highly recommend "Nuova; or, The New Bee" to readers who enjoy thought-provoking science fiction with a focus on environmental themes. Kellogg's blend of scientific accuracy and storytelling makes this book both educational and entertaining, offering a unique perspective on the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Dante's Vita Nuova, New Edition

Dante's Vita Nuova, New Edition PDF Author: Dante Alighieri
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 9780253201621
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
"A fresh, new version of a 1962 translation that has had enormous popularity in comparative literature classes. The Vita Nuova (the New Life) is a small book which relates in prose and often very beautiful verse the story of the youthful Dante's love for Beatrice. The esay which follows the translation provides new insights into this puzzling thirteenth-century work. Musa regards Dante's intention in this so-called "Book of Memory" as a cruel and comic commentary on the youthful lover. He argues that Dante, using the tradition of love poetry current in his time, points up the foolishness and shallowness of his protagonist, a self-centered and self-pitying youth who only occasionally in the progress of his suffering catches even a glimpse of the true nature of Love or his beloved. "The sensitive man who would realize a man's destiny must ruthlessly cut out of his heart the canker at its center [i.e. self-pity], the canker that the heart instinctively tends to cultivate." According to Musa, this is one of Dante's central ideas. Dante scholars, libraries, and students of the Italian classics will welcome this distinguished translation and its provocative commentary"--Back cover.

Part of the Macmillan Collector’s Library; a series of stunning, clothbound, pocket-sized classics with gold foiled edges and ribbon markers. These beautiful books make perfect gifts or a treat for any book lover. From the first time the poet sets eyes on Beatrice, he proclaims that ‘love quite governed my soul’ and his devotion to her knows no end. By recalling each meeting with Beatrice this short book is at once a heartfelt account of youthful love and a religious allegory. La Vita Nuova serves as an important precursor to Dante’s masterpiece, The Divine Comedy. This edition is the English translation by Dante Gabriel Rossetti from the original Italian. It was first published in The Early Italian Poets in 1861 and then reissued in 1874 by Dante and his circle. La Vita Nuova

La Vita Nuova PDF Author: Dante Dante Alighieri
Publisher: Harvard University Press

Category : Literary Criticism

Pages : 159

Book Description
La Vita Nuova (1292–94) has many aspects. Dante’s libello, or “little book,” is most obviously a book about love. In a sequence of thirty-one poems, the author recounts his love of Beatrice from his first sight of her (when he was nine and she eight), through unrequited love and chance encounters, to his profound grief sixteen years later at her sudden and unexpected death. Linked with Dante’s verse are commentaries on the individual poems—their form and meaning—as well as the events and feelings from which they originate. Through these commentaries the poet comes to see romantic love as the first step in a spiritual journey that leads to salvation and the capacity for divine love. He aims to reside with Beatrice among the stars. David Slavitt gives us a readable and appealing translation of one of the early, defining masterpieces of European literature, animating its verse and prose with a fluid, lively, and engaging idiom and rhythm. His translation makes this first major book of Dante’s stand out as a powerful work of art in its own regard, independent of its “junior” status to La Commedia. In an Introduction, Seth Lerer considers Dante as a poet of civic life. “Beatrice,” he reminds us, “lives as much on city streets and open congregations as she does in bedroom fantasies and dreams.”
