A Numerical Model of the Subaerial Landslide Generated Waves of the Berkeley Pit

A Numerical Model of the Subaerial Landslide Generated Waves of the Berkeley Pit PDF Author: Matthew McHugh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Mining engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 25

Book Description
Southwestern Montana has a very rich history because of its mining activities. Butte, home to the richest hill on earth, is no exception. Underground operations resulted in 10,000 miles of horizontal underground workings [1]. In 1950s the mining methods converted from underground to surface open-pit mining with the opening of the Berkeley Pit. In 1982 the pumps shut down and the Pit began receiving groundwater discharge. Slope instabilities along the Pit's slopes result in occasional soil sloughs; in some instances, the sloughing generates a large enough volume of soil to propagate a wave across the Pit Lake. This is known as a landslide generated wave. This paper presents a numerical model that approximates the wave velocity and wave height of a landslide generated wave. The coupled model uses a simplified Navier-Stokes equation for wave velocity and the advection equation for wave height. The model successfully provides working boundary conditions; however, the instabilities of the numerical model inhibit verification of the model.

A Numerical Model for Predicting the Effects of Landslide-Generated Water Waters

A Numerical Model for Predicting the Effects of Landslide-Generated Water Waters PDF Author: Donald C. Raney
Publisher:

Languages : en
Pages : 44

Book Description
A numerical model for the generation and propagation of landslide-generated water waves in reservoirs is developed. Only two-dimensional hydrodynamic quantities are obtained from the program; however, a pseudo three-dimensional effect is present since the three-dimensional geometry of an actual reservoir can be represented. The model provides an approach to the evaluation of the first wave crest that may result from potential landslide regions located on reservoirs. Arbitrary landslide volumes, reservoir depths, slide propagation velocity, slide shape, and initial and final location of the slide can be considered. The numerical results have been compared with experimental results obtained on a 1:120 undistorted scale model of Libby Dam and Lake Koocanusa in Montana.

Numerical Modeling of Tsunami Waves

Book Description
This solutions manual is a companion to the workbook, Practical Numerical Mathematics with MATLAB: A workbook. It is intended for use by individual students independently studying the workbook and provides complete MATLAB code and numerical results for each of the exercises in the workbook and will be especially useful for those students without previous MATLAB programming experience. It is also valuable for classroom instructors to help pinpoint the author's intent in each exercise and to provide a model for graders.

Advanced Numerical Models For Simulating Tsunami Waves And Runup

Advanced Numerical Models For Simulating Tsunami Waves And Runup PDF Author: Philip L-f Liu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814477133
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
This review volume is divided into two parts. The first part includes five review papers on various numerical models. Pedersen provides a brief but thorough review of the theoretical background for depth-integrated wave equations, which are employed to simulate tsunami runup. LeVeque and George describe high-resolution finite volume methods for solving the nonlinear shallow water equations. The focus of their discussion is on the applications of these methods to tsunami runup. In recent years, several advanced 3D numerical models have been introduced to the field of coastal engineering to calculate breaking waves and wave-structure interactions. These models are still under development and are at different stages of maturity. Rogers and Dalrymple discuss the Smooth Particles Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, which is a meshless method. Wu and Liu present their Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model for simulating the landslide-generated waves. Finally, Frandsen introduces the lattice Boltzmann method with the consideration of a free surface. The second part of the review volume contains the descriptions of the benchmark problems with eleven extended abstracts submitted by the workshop participants. All these papers are compared with their numerical results with benchmark solutions.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics PDF Author: Gui-Rong Liu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9812384561
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
This is the first-ever book on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and its variations, covering the theoretical background, numerical techniques, code implementation issues, and many novel and interesting applications. It contains many appealing and practical examples, including free surface flows, high explosive detonation and explosion, underwater explosion and water mitigation of explosive shocks, high velocity impact and penetration, and multiple scale simulations coupled with the molecular dynamics method. An SPH source code is provided and coupling of SPH and molecular dynamics is discussed for multiscale simulation, making this a friendly book for readers and SPH users.
