Ce cours s'adresse principalement aux étudiants de maîtrise, de DEA et d'écoles d'ingénieurs qui s'initient à la méthode des éléments finis. Le recours intensif à l'outil numérique fait parfois oublier que le résultat d'un calcul d'ordinateur ne peut être correctement interprété que par l'ingénieur qui maîtrise non seulement sa discipline mais également les fondements théoriques de la méthode. Il a été élaboré à partir de notes personnelles, de questions et difficultés des étudiants depuis la vingtaine d'années que je le dispense. Le tout complété par de nombreux problèmes traités et abondamment commentés, dans les domaines de la mécanique des milieux continus, du calcul des structures, de la résistance des matériaux et de la diff ; usion thermique ou hydraulique. Suite à cette expérience d'enseignement accumulée, il m'est apparu que les difficultés des étudiants se situent plus au niveau des principes généraux de construction de solutions approchées qu'au niveau des calculs à proprement parler. Quand les expressions des matrices élémentaires sont établies, ils arrivent assez aisément à mener les calculs à partir des fonctions d'interpolation. Pour cette raison, cet ouvrage insiste plus sur des problèmes liés à la construction générale des solutions numériques des équations aux dérivées partielles que sur la formulation même des éléments. L'objectif principal de cet ouvrage est donc d'amener l'étudiant à mieux appréhender la nécessité de la construction d'une méthode numérique comme la méthode des éléments finis pour résoudre les équations aux dérivées partielles et attirer son attention sur les précautions générales à prendre pour que les éventuelles solutions soient acceptables. La lecture de l'ouvrage requiert peu de prérequis. Les équations aux dérivées partielles à résoudre sont en général rappelées quand c'est nécessaire. Une maîtrise de l'algèbre matricielle élémentaire, de la géométrie tensorielle et déférentielle est parfois exigée. Le niveau mathématique indispensable, mis à part l'algèbre matricielle, est assez sommaire et on insiste plus sur le sens physique des choses. Quasiment pour chaque équation écrite est donnée une interprétation physique.
