The Sovereign States
Author: James Jackson Kilpatrick
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781334442209
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 366
Book Description
Excerpt from The Sovereign States: Notes of a Citizen of Virginia Among the more melancholy aspects of the genteel world we live in IS a slow decline in the enjoyment that men once found in the combat Of ideas, free and unrestrained. Competition of any sort, indeed, seems to be regarded these days, in our schools and else where, as somehow not in very good taste. Under the curious doc trines Of the Fair Trade Act, vigorous salesmanship is unfair, and retailers are enjoined against discommoding their fellows. Mr. Stevenson's criticism of the administration's foreign policy, during the last presidential campaign, was not that the policies were so very wrong: They were not bi-partisan. With a few ro bust exceptions, our writers paint in pastels; our political scholars write a sort of ruffled-sleeve, harpsichord prose. We duel with soft pillows, or with buttoned foils; our ideas have lace on them; we are importuned to steer, with moderation, down the middle of the road. These chamber music proprieties I acknowledge, simply to say, now, that the essay which follows should not be misunderstood. May it please the court, this is not a work Of history; it is a work of advocacy. The intention is not primarily to inform, but to ex hort. The aim is not to be Objective; it is to be partisan. The History and Present State of Virginia
Author: Robert Beverley
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469607956
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 383
Book Description
While in London in 1705, Robert Beverley wrote and published The History and Present State of Virginia, one of the earliest printed English-language histories about North America by an author born there. Like his brother-in-law William Byrd II, Beverley was a scion of Virginia's planter elite, personally ambitious and at odds with royal governors in the colony. As a native-born American--most famously claiming "I am an Indian--he provided English readers with the first thoroughgoing account of the province's past, natural history, Indians, and current politics and society. In this new edition, Susan Scott Parrish situates Beverley and his History in the context of the metropolitan-provincial political and cultural issues of his day and explores the many contradictions embedded in his narrative. Parrish's introduction and the accompanying annotation, along with a fresh transcription of the 1705 publication and a more comprehensive comparison of emendations in the 1722 edition, will open Beverley's History to new, twenty-first-century readings by students of transatlantic history, colonialism, natural science, literature, and ethnohistory.
