Book Description
Though perhaps best known for his portraits, American painter Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) also developed detailed theories of animal camouflage. With his fine-arts training and his careful observations of nature, Thayer created works that he believed argued for his views on natural selection. He later patented his camouflage patterns and lobbied the US military for the use of his designs on ships and uniforms; his theories were eventually published in 1909 and were hotly debated by leading scholars and public figures of the day, including Theodore Roosevelt. This book is the first to address Thayer's participation in some of the greatest scientific and cultural debates of his age, proposing that the artist's seemingly idiosyncratic religious subjects and scientific theories were an attempt to reconcile spiritual uncertainties in a time of emerging science. The new scholarship lends insight into an Anglo-American culture unmoored by Darwinism and the horrors of World War I.

Author: Balázs M. Mezei Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing ISBN: 0567677796 Category : Religion Languages : en Pages : 224
Book Description
This volume offers a practical and innovative interpretation of divine revelation, from a philosophical-theological perspective. Balázs M. Mezei outlines the most important presuppositions of our notion of divine revelation in a historic and semantic setting, as well as elaborating upon the methodology of model analysis. He then introduces and analyses the notion of self-revelation as the most important modern understanding of divine revelation; and presents the notion of “apocalyptic personhood” as a corollary of radical personhood, which is further developed into apocalyptic phenomenology. Mezei further examines the remarkable development of some of the most important notions in the history of Christianity, along with the homogenous infrastructure of these notions in the very essence of the religion: the doctrine of Trinity. Covering aspects of revelation from semantics to historical and cognitive origins, and engaging with a wide variety of texts – including Augustine, Thomas Aquinas and Joseph Ratzinger – Mezei makes a strong and clear statement when explaining what the radical revelation is, how it can be understood and its overall importance.
Author: Iain McGee Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers ISBN: Category : Religion Languages : en Pages : 373
Book Description
What are non-Christian religions? How is God related to them? How do they relate to Christianity? In this original book, Iain McGee explores five Christian theologians’ answers to these questions. The study spans the history of the church, covering figures from four different continents: Justin Martyr, Augustine, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, and Daniel Strange. Focusing on the revelation-religion interface in the writings of these scholars, McGee outlines and analyzes their varied understandings of Logos illumination, the prisca theologia, and the demonic, alongside the relationships between them and their impact on non-Christian religion. McGee forwards an argument that each theology can be considered a biblically informed, contextually reflective, and reactive response to significant religious challenges faced by these Christian thinkers in their attempts to demonstrate the uniqueness of the Christian faith.

Book Description
A number of innovative hermeneutical approaches emerged in Muslim exegetical discourse in the second half of the 20th century. Among these developments is a trend of systematic reform theology that emphasises a humanistic approach, whereby revelation is understood to be dependent not only upon its initiator, God, but also upon its recipient, Prophet Muhammad, who takes an active role in the process.Ali Akbar examines the works of four noted scholars of Islam: Fazlur Rahman (Pakistan), Abdolkarim Soroush (Iran), Muhammad Mujtahed Shabestari (Iran) and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd (Egypt). His study shows that the consequences of taking a humanistic approach to understanding revelation are not confined to the realm of speculation about God-human relations, but also to interpreting Qur'A nic socio-political precepts. And the four scholars emerge as a distinctive group of Muslim thinkers who open up a new horizon in contemporary Islamic discourse.
