ISBN: 0307410323
Category : Fiction

Pages : 320

Book Description
A new Chief Inspector Wexford mystery from the author who Time magazine has called “the best mystery writer in the English-speaking world.” When the truffle-hunting dog starts to dig furiously, his master’s first reaction is delight at the size of the clump the dog has unearthed: at the going rate, this one truffle might be worth several hundred pounds. Then the dirt falls away to reveal not a precious mushroom but the bones and tendons of what is clearly a human hand. In Not in the Flesh, Chief Inspector Wexford tries to piece together events that took place eleven years earlier, a time when someone was secretly interred in a secluded patch of English countryside. Now Wexford and his team will need to interrogate everyone who lives nearby to see if they can turn up a match for the dead man among the eighty-five people in this part of England who have disappeared over the past decade. Then, when a second body is discovered nearby, Wexford experiences a feeling that’s become a rarity for the veteran policeman: surprise. As Wexford painstakingly moves to resolve these multiple mysteries, long-buried secrets are brought to daylight, and Ruth Rendell once again proves why she has been hailed as our greatest living mystery writer.

Both Flesh And Not

Both Flesh And Not PDF Author: David Foster Wallace
Publisher: Penguin Group Australia
ISBN: 1742536689
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Brilliant, dazzling, never-before-collected non-fiction, by the legendary David Foster Wallace Beloved for his wonderfully discerning eye, his verbal elasticity and his uniquely generous imagination, David Foster Wallace was heralded by critics and fans as the voice of a generation. Collected in Both Flesh and Not are fifteen essays published for the first time in book form. From 'Federer Both Flesh and Not', considered by many to be his nonfiction masterpiece; to 'The (As it Were) Seminal Importance of Terminator 2,' which deftly dissects James Cameron's blockbuster; to 'Fictional Futures and the Conspicuously Young', an examination of television's effect on a new generation of writers, David Foster Wallace's writing swoops from erudite literary discussion to open-hearted engagement with the most familiar of our twentieth-century cultural references. A celebration of David Foster Wallace's great loves – for language, for precision, for meaning - and a feast of enjoyment for his fans, Both Flesh and Not is a fitting tribute to this writer who was never concerned with anything less important than what it means to be alive. 'The prose isn't showing off; it effortlessly catches the fleeting thought. You have the illusion that you're being talked to, one on one, by an extraordinarily intelligent friend.' Weekend Australian 'In [Wallace's] ambitious attempt to realise the literary project sketched out in these early essays – to reconcile head and heart, to transcend the perceived limitations of his own time – he was to create the extraordinary body of work he has left us.' Saturday Age 'At their best these essays remind us of Wallace's arsenal of talents: his restless, heat-seeking reportorial eye; his ability to convey the physical or emotional truth of things with a couple of flicks of the wrist; his capacity to make leaps, from the mundane to the metaphysical, with breathtaking velocity and ardor.' Flesh Vs. Spirit

Flesh Vs. Spirit PDF Author: Corrine Rios

ISBN: 9781092490627
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 119

Book Description
Are you living a rich and satisfying life? I sure wasn't. I was alive in the body but not really living as the Lord desired for me. I knew there was so much more, I just didn't know how to get there. There are so many of us who aren't living this satisfying life that the Lord desires for us. It may look to the outside world that we have it all together and have everything we want and need but deep down we are miserable and unsatisfied. Is that you? Do you really want to know why you aren't living that satisfying (abundant) life that Jesus desires for you in John 10:10? Like me, you aren't doing...Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice." Luke 11:18 (NLT) You aren't living because you continue to disobey the Lord. I have been called to teach the "not-so-good news" in the Good News so that when you hear the Good News it is really Good News! We do this by self-examination. That means looking at our thoughts, words, and actions and seeing how we are measuring up with the Lords standards. This first book in this series is the most important. In order to be blessed, to have joy in your tribulations, to be at peace with God and others, to live that abundant life on earth, and to be used by God, you must put off a preoccupation of self and start living the basics of Christianity. You must put off your anger, your unforgiveness, your unloving ways, your unsubmissiveness, your fear, worry, depression and your life dominating sins. This is achieved when you understand His focus for our living. "Deny self, carry your cross, and follow Him." Luke 9:23-24.
