Book Description
Excerpt from Northern Antiquities, Vol. 2 of 2 I Know not, whether among the multitude of interesting objects which history offers to our reflection, there are any more worthy to engage our thoughts, than the different Religions which have appeared with splendour in the world. It is on this stage, if I may be allowed the expression, that men are represented, as they really are; that their characters are distinctly marked and truly exhibited. Here they display all the foibles, the passions and wants of the heart; the resources, the power and the imperfections of the mind. It is only by studying the different Religions that we become sensible how far our natures are capable of being debased by prejudices, or elevated, even above themselves, by found and solid principles. Book Description
Excerpt from Waukesha County, Vol. 2: Northern Townships; January 1923 Waukesha county is located in the southeastern part of Wisconsin. It is bordered on the east by Milwaukee county, which separates it from the shore of Lake Michigan. South of it are Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties, between it and the northern boundary of Illinois; to the west of it is Jefferson county, and north of it the counties of Dodge and Washington. A recent description of the topography of this beautiful county describes it as "composed of prairies, oak openings, small marshes, almost innumerable lakes and small hills. The openings and prairies are rich, productive and valuable lands. The natural resources of the county are. as varied as they are extensive, while its natural beauties would seem to be unsurpassed." It is for its beautiful lakes that this attractive county is chiefly renowned. Most of these are located in its northwestern part. Here, in the townships of Oconomowoc, Merton, Summit and Delafield are located nine large and fifteen small lakes. The group of lakes about Oconomowoc "lies in a belt of terminal moraines and out-wash plains. The outwash plains contain many pots or kettles, formed by the melting of buried ice-blocks, and some of the lake basins are of the same origin." Another group of lakes, Big and Little Muskego and Denoon, in the southeastern corner of the county, do not equal the foregoing in beauty of shoreline. Muskego lake is a broad, shallow body of water, surrounded by large swamps. Three other lakes, of medium size, are Howitt, Phantom and Eagle, located near the county line, in the southwestern corner. Book Description
Excerpt from The Land of the Midnight Sun, Vol. 1 of 2: Summer and Winter Journeys Through Sweden, Norway, Lapland, and Northern Finland; With Descriptions of the Inner Life of the People, Their Manners and Customs, the Primitive Antiquities, Etc I have adopted the spelling of each country when referring to the names of places and people, etc.; but, as the Swedish and Norwegian languages are very similar, and both now in a state of transition, gradually conforming the spelling to one standard, no confusion will result from this plan. I submit this work to the public, with the hope that they may share with me in the interest attaching to the Scandi navian people and their country. I cannot refrain, before sending these volumes to press, from thanking my old friend and publisher, Mr. Murray, for the kind and liberal manner in which he has always attended to my interests in the publication of my books of travels.
