Book Description
During March and April 1971 scientists aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson studied the thermohaline and density structures in the subarctic-subtropical transition zone of the northwestern Pacific. A total of 270 STD stations were taken. Heavy weather prevented taking stations north of latitude 43 N. The primary objectives of the field study in the northwestern Pacific were: 1) to investigate the mesoscale thermohaline and density structures in 2700 km long high resolution sections across the subarctic and subtropical boundaries. 2) to determine the mesoscale signatures of the subarctic and subtropical fronts at the end of the winter season. 3) to study the mesoscale dynamic height and baroclinic flow structures across the subarctic-subtropical transition zone. 4) to assess the thermohaline variability in the Oyashio region off northeastern Japan. Keywords: Oceanographic data; Spring season; Salinity temperature depth; Oceanographic fronts; Sea water.

Biology, Oceanography, and Fisheries of the North Pacific Transition Zone and Subarctic Frontal Zone
Ecological Geography of the Sea
Author: Alan R. Longhurst
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080465579
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 575
Book Description
This book presents an in-depth discussion of the biological and ecological geography of the oceans. It synthesizes locally restricted studies of the ocean to generate a global geography of the vast marine world.Based on patterns of algal ecology, the book divides the ocean into four primary compartments, which are then subdivided into secondary compartments.*Includes color insert of the latest in satellite imagery showing the world's oceans, their similarities and differences*Revised and updated to reflect the latest in oceanographic research*Ideal for anyone interested in understanding ocean ecology -- accessible and informative
