Book Description
During Nov and Dec 1969 scientists aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson studied the thermohaline and density structures in the transition zones between the California current, the tradewind circulation, the outflow from the Gulf of California, and the north equatorial current. Most of the investigations were concentrated off Baja California, the Revilla Gigedos Island region, and across the mouth of the Gulf of California. Of the 254 STD stations planned, 249 were completed; four were lost and one was omitted, because the water in lee of Isla Clarion, Mexico was too shallow. The primary objectives of the field study were: 1) to investigate the mesoscale thermohaline and density structures in the transition zones associated with the outer boundaries of the California current. 2) to study the frontal structures in the Revilla Gigedos islands region, where the California current, the outflow from the Gulf of California, and the north equatorial current intermingle. 3) to determine the mesoscale thermohaline and baroclinic flow structure across the mouth of the Gulf of California by very high resolution hydrographic sections. Keywords: Oceanographic data; Sea water; Ocean currents; Autumn; Ocean circulation; Salinity temperature depth; Oceanographic fronts.

North Pacific Ocean, Northwest Pacific Transition Zone

North Pacific Ocean, Northwest Pacific Transition Zone PDF Author: Gunnar I. Roden

Category : Chemical oceanography
Languages : en
Pages : 548

Book Description
During March and April 1971 scientists aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson studied the thermohaline and density structures in the subarctic-subtropical transition zone of the northwestern Pacific. A total of 270 STD stations were taken. Heavy weather prevented taking stations north of latitude 43 N. The primary objectives of the field study in the northwestern Pacific were: 1) to investigate the mesoscale thermohaline and density structures in 2700 km long high resolution sections across the subarctic and subtropical boundaries. 2) to determine the mesoscale signatures of the subarctic and subtropical fronts at the end of the winter season. 3) to study the mesoscale dynamic height and baroclinic flow structures across the subarctic-subtropical transition zone. 4) to assess the thermohaline variability in the Oyashio region off northeastern Japan. Keywords: Oceanographic data; Spring season; Salinity temperature depth; Oceanographic fronts; Sea water.

Book Description
During March and April 1968, scientists aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson studied the thermohaline and density structures in the subarctic-subtropical transition zone of the central North Pacific. Additional hydrographic sections were made north of Kahuka Point, Oahu. Of the 130 STD stations planned for this area, 127 were completed and 3 were lost because of weather. The primary objectives of the field study were: 1) to investigate the mesoscale thermohaline and density structures in long meridional high resolution sections across the subarctic and subtropical boundaries. 2) to determine the mesoscale signatures of the subarctic and subtropical fronts at the boundaries of the transition zone. 3) to study the mesoscale dynamic height and baroclinic flow structures across the transition zone. 4) to access the submesoscale thermohaline and baroclinic flow variability in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Ridge. Keywords: Sea Water; Oceanographic fronts; Oceanographic data; Salinity Temperature depth; Spring season.
