For the purpose of this report a homogeneous data material has been established for a total Nordic population of more than 12 million people who were aged 20-64 years around the first of January, 1971. Approximately 775,000 deaths were recorded in this population during the ten-year period 1971-80. The data material is unique, not only because of its size but also because it has been established by individual linkage of data from a number of registers, i.e. primarily the population registers from censuses in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden around 1971 and the death registers for the tenyear period 1971-80.
