Ion Irradiation of Dielectrics for Photonic Applications

Ion Irradiation of Dielectrics for Photonic Applications PDF Author: Feng Chen
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 981154607X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
This book focuses on the fundamentals, technologies and properties of ion irradiation of dielectric materials (e.g. glasses, crystals) with regard to various photonic applications. It introduces readers to diverse ion-beam techniques for the fabrication and modification of micron- or nanoscale photonic structures, including optical waveguides, photonic crystals, and nanoparticle (nano-spheres and nano-rods) systems, and presents state-of-the-art advances in this multi-disciplinary research field, demonstrating the unique capabilities of ion-beam technologies in optical dielectric materials processing. The book discusses in detail the properties of ion-beam processed waveguides, as well as the modification of dielectrics for photonic applications, such as electro-optic modulation, nonlinear frequency conversion, waveguide amplification and lasing. It also explores synthesis and the correlated optical effects of nanoparticles by ion beams, and features examples of successful micro- and nano-photonic devices. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will particularly appeal to readers interested in ion-beam technology, materials science, and integrated optics.

Photonic Waveguides

Photonic Waveguides PDF Author: Azzedine Boudrioua
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118623789
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
This book presents the principles of non-linear integrated optics. The first objective is to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of integrated optics so that they may be able to develop the theoretical and experimental tools to study and control the linear and non-linear optical properties of waveguides. The potential use of these structures can then be determined in order to realize integrated optical components for light modulation and generation. The theoretical models are accompanied by experimental tools and their setting in order to characterize the studied phenomenon. The passage from theory to practice makes the comprehension of the physical phenomena simple and didactic. The book also gives a presentation of the industrial applications of the integrated optical components. The studied topics range from the theory of waveguides and the linear and non-linear optical characterization techniques to photonic crystals. This last field constitutes a major challenge of photonic technologies of the 21st century.

Nonlinear Photonic Crystals

Nonlinear Photonic Crystals PDF Author: Richart E. Slusher
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662051443
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
Nonlinear optical studies of periodic dielectric structures have blossomed in the past two decades. New fabrication techniques are producing fiber grating and multidimensional photonic crystals in materials where the refractive index can be varied by light pulses and beams. Gap solitons that can propagate at any velocity from zero to the speed of light and spatial solitons that prevent the diffractive spread of light in waveguide arrays are two examples of the new phenomena described in this book. Many new materials and structures are being developed that will impact new optical devices with applications in optical communications and optical data processing. All the above topics are addressed in detail in this book.

Photorefractive Parametric Interaction of Volume and Leaky Optical Waves in Planar Waveguide on Lithium Niobate

Photorefractive Parametric Interaction of Volume and Leaky Optical Waves in Planar Waveguide on Lithium Niobate PDF Author: V. M. Shandarov
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 4

Book Description
In optical waveguides with high photorefractive sensitivity the frequency - degenerate four - wave interactions are observed as well as in optical nonlinear materials. Several types of interactions nonanalogous for the processes in volume materials, can be realized in optical waveguides because of specifics of their properties. In this report the results of observation and investigation of the parametric interaction between volume and leaky waves in planar waveguide lithium niobates:titanium:iron that have not been observed earlier are presented.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Annealed Proton Exchanged Lithium Niobate Waveguides

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Annealed Proton Exchanged Lithium Niobate Waveguides PDF Author: M. L. Bortz

Book Description
Annealed proton exchange (APE) is an important technique for the fabrication of waveguides in LiNbO3 for electrooptic and nonlinear optical applications. Unannealed proton exchanged (PE) waveguides have step-like refractive index profiles and large extraordinary refractive index changes, but suffer from reduced electrooptic and nonlinear coefficients. Post-exchange annealing is necessary to produce single mode waveguides that exhibit electrooptic and nonlinear optical properties comparable to bulk LiNbO3 and low insertion loss in fiber optic applications. While the PE process is well-characterized, quantitative modeling of APE waveguides is much less well developed. In this paper we present measurements of the effective mode indices and fundamental mode profiles for APE waveguides subjected to a variety of exchange and annealing conditions in both x- and z-cut substrates, along with empirical models for the concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient and dispersion that allow accurate calculation of the refractive index profile for APE waveguides as a function of exchange depth and anneal time for wavelengths between 0.4 and 1.1 micrometer. The reduction of the nonlinear susceptibility in PE waveguides, measured by a reflected second harmonic generation technique, is also discussed.
