Book Description
This consultation paper is based on the reforms proposed by David Freud in his report "Reducing dependency, increasing opportunity: options for the future of welfare to work" (2007, DWP, www.dwp.gov.uk/publications/dwp/2007/welfarereview.pdf). The Government's vision for the welfare state is one where no one is written off and everyone is required to fulfil their responsibilities to prepare for, look for and take up work, with support provided at all stages. The reforms are designed to achieve an active and personalised welfare state, boosting employment and tackling long-term benefit dependency. Disabled persons or people with long-term health conditions will be targeted, in a bid to reduce the number of people on incapacity benefits by one million. A new Work Capability Assessment will re-assess all existing incapacity benefits claimants for eligibility to the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - to ensure they are receiving the right benefit and their personal needs are identified. ESA will be a temporary benefit for most, as people recover from or adapt to their condition and prepare for a return to work. Private and voluntary sector providers will be eligible to undertake support work. The medical assessment procedure will be reviewed. The reforms also tackle child poverty by providing additional support while strengthening parents' responsibilities to contribute financially and emotionally to their children's upbringing. The benefits system will be streamlined: a long term goal is the abolition of Income Support and the creation of a system based on Jobseeker's Allowance and the ESA. The Government also wishes to devolve more power to individual customers, local partnerships and providers to improve the quality and effectiveness of services. Providers will have greater freedom to innovate and deliver services through a new "Right to Bid" process.

Why I Write
Author: George Orwell
Publisher: Renard Press Ltd
ISBN: 1913724263
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 15
Book Description
George Orwell set out ‘to make political writing into an art’, and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature – his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell’s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership. In Why I Write, the first in the Orwell’s Essays series, Orwell describes his journey to becoming a writer, and his movement from writing poems to short stories to the essays, fiction and non-fiction we remember him for. He also discusses what he sees as the ‘four great motives for writing’ – ‘sheer egoism’, ‘aesthetic enthusiasm’, ‘historical impulse’ and ‘political purpose’ – and considers the importance of keeping these in balance. Why I Write is a unique opportunity to look into Orwell’s mind, and it grants the reader an entirely different vantage point from which to consider the rest of the great writer’s oeuvre. 'A writer who can – and must – be rediscovered with every age.' — Irish Times

Factfulness
Author: Hans Rosling
Publisher: Flatiron Books
ISBN: 125012381X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353
Book Description
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “One of the most important books I’ve ever read—an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.” – Bill Gates “Hans Rosling tells the story of ‘the secret silent miracle of human progress’ as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.” —Melinda Gates "Factfulness by Hans Rosling, an outstanding international public health expert, is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases." - Former U.S. President Barack Obama Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends—what percentage of the world’s population live in poverty; why the world’s population is increasing; how many girls finish school—we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess teachers, journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens. They reveal the ten instincts that distort our perspective—from our tendency to divide the world into two camps (usually some version of us and them) to the way we consume media (where fear rules) to how we perceive progress (believing that most things are getting worse). Our problem is that we don’t know what we don’t know, and even our guesses are informed by unconscious and predictable biases. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. That doesn’t mean there aren’t real concerns. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world and empower you to respond to the crises and opportunities of the future. --- “This book is my last battle in my life-long mission to fight devastating ignorance...Previously I armed myself with huge data sets, eye-opening software, an energetic learning style and a Swedish bayonet for sword-swallowing. It wasn’t enough. But I hope this book will be.” Hans Rosling, February 2017.

Do Not Write off the Least

Pages : 153
Book Description
Ordinarily, things do not happen the way we want them to happen. They do happen the way they happen not because we want them to happen that way but because that’s the way things happen. We loathe letting things happen in any other way other than how we want them to happen. Most of us do not have the time to take a look at ourselves. We do not have time to ‘see’ ourselves. This book is for encouraging ourselves to look for the specific purpose of looking to see even the unseen. Because we fail to see—to know—and do not care to understand the existential meaning and ontic purpose of the mode-of-being-in-the-world, we lose our mooring and start practicing undesirable ways of living. Some turn into self-praisers, some get busy creating victims and programing them, ignoring and denying the ever-present sufficiency of peace and love—being blind to it. “A great take away from this book is that meaningful reflections are within touching distance of everyone one of us; we do not have to be professional or trained philosophers to embark on it.” — Rev. (Dr) Valson Thampu

The Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 (SI 2009 No. 480)
Author: Great Britain. Social Security Advisory Committee
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9780101756624
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 88
Book Description
The Government referred proposals concerning the draft Social Security (Flexible New Deal) Regulations 2009 to the Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) on 1 October 2008. These regulations will implement the Government's proposals to introduce an enhanced regime for those claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). This will include implementing the Flexible New Deal (FND) as a new employment programme for those who claim the benefit for a year, or after six months for those assessed as having greatest need of help to find work. The Committee's report gives broad support to elements of the revised Jobseekers Regime and the Flexible New Deal, but also expresses a number of concerns about the proposals, and makes eight recommendations. These fall under four broad headings: the extension of conditionality; the speed of the rollout of the full programme; the contracting out of services; and the changed economic situation. The Government sets out its response to the Committee's concerns, and has decided to proceed with the proposals as laid out in the Regulations originally referred to the Committee on 1 October 2008.

Japan on the Upswing
Author: Yoshiyuki Iwamoto
Publisher: Algora Publishing
ISBN: 0875864635
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 494
Book Description
Japan's effervescent economy, charging ahead in the late 1980s under the stimulation of a two and a half percent prime rate, shook American confidence ... until the bubble burst in 1989, leaving banks saddled with over $200 billion in bad loans. Iwamoto shows how and why the lenders racked up all this uncollectible debt, who took advantage of whom and how actions by business and government officials contributed to the crisis. Along the way, his illustrative examples share some of the flavor of business life in Japan including the academic cliques and mobster clans, the after-hours camaraderie and the legendary "entertainment" that was used to evade inspections by the Ministry of Finance. The author then describes Prime Minister Koizumi's initiatives that halved the bad loans by March 2005 and inspired foreign investors to bring back their cash. With strong exports, increasing capital investment and decreasing unemployment, Japan is truly on the upswing. Koizumi's party reaped the benefit with a landslide victory in the September 2005 general election, and he continues to push for further restructuring. The author goes on to identify and describe the 20 most successful companies in Japan this year, and gives clues as to what makes them thrive. Many aspects of Japan's economy are highlighted in tables and statistics, from "Differences in Pay Scale by Type of Industry" to "Results at Seven Mega Banking Groups and Forecast for March 31, 2006," plus balance sheets of companies like Toyota, Shiseido and McDonald's Japan
