Includes copies of letters and the journal of Mr Hamilton, sent to Fox and compiled by Hamilton as he travelled from Wellington to Port Cooper with local Maori, surveying the surrounding lands, especially near Otago, for speculative New Zealand Company settlement and expansion plans. Other letters and enclosures record statements of the provisions, medical comforts, etc. expended on board various emigrant vessels such as the 'Eden' for victualling passengers. There are passenger lists and records made by surgeons on board these ships attached. Letters also specifically refer to the emigration of single females sent on the 'Phoebe Dunbar' by the Ladies Female Emigration Society of Edinburgh to Nelson. Statements of land sales in areas such as Whanganui and Nelson created by the company are also enclosed within letters, with many letters discussing legal issues arising from advertisements issued to prospective purchasers encouraging them to send applications for conveyances to Company agents. The general financial accounts of the Company are also referred to throughout these letters.

Wakefield, Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company in 1846 and relate to the legal and financial affairs of the New Zealand Company, referring to land transfers, grants and orders. There is a manuscript table showing the statement of notices of transfers received by Wakefield from August 1839 to 16 December 1845. The Company's claim to lands in Port Nicholson is commonly referred to throughout, with many noting reports and surveys of land made to ascertain proportions that may be granted as compensation to the local Maori. There is mention of hostilities amongst the British settlers and the Maori, and the Wairau Massacre in particular is noted within these letters.

Other letters refer to trips made by Governor George Grey to southern settlements to discuss with William Fox, and others, the recently passed act to make provision for the government of New Zealand, and to resume suspended proceedings in the settlement of the Company's titles to land. There are several letters and papers recording statements and notices of land transfers, orders and exchanges in Wellington, with later letters referring to draft grants sent to the New Zealand Company for the Port Nicholson district. Many letters are sent between Governor Grey and Francis Dillon Bell, and refer directly to the Company's attempts to acquire Wairarapa, and the obstacles posed by the Maori. Military detachments raised against Maori forces and hostilities are also referred to.

Legal disputes, arbitration and costs incurred by the Company's land sales are also referred to within several letters. Advertisements issued in British newspapers encouraging relatives of emigrants already settled in New Zealand to apply to emigrate are present, including copies of the 'Wellington Independent' featuring adverts. Land transfers and purchase agreements between the Company and British proprietors are mentioned, along with letters detailing passengers on board the 'Cornwall' barque, noting information of deaths, births, the number of passengers in each form of accommodation and the number landed at New Plymouth, Nelson, Wellington and Otago. Lists of other emigrants applying for assisted passage to New Zealand can also be found here. A copy of a 'Report of the Proceedings of a Trial in the Supreme Court at Auckland', 1848, is included, as is a document detailing Crown Title Bills for "quieting titles to land in the province of New Ulster". Expense statements relative to the settlement of Wellington are also included.

Correspondence and enclosures relate to the financial affairs, accounts and land affairs of the New Zealand Company at this time. Frequent references are made to the company's efforts to raise revenue, recover debts and deal with compensation claims. Surveys made of the southern provinces are noted in several letters, as are transfers of land order and the issue of land grants. Many letters refer to negotiations held with the Maori for the sale and cession of their lands, with Governor Grey noted as having been afforded management of such affairs and applying for the necessary crown grants. The sale of Banks Peninsula to the French is also noted in letters here. Certain lands are noted as being granted to surveying cadets having arrived in the 'Brougham'. The death of Colonel Wakefield is discussed. A copy of the New Zealand Government Gazette for the Province of New Muster (Vol, 1, No. 21) is also included here and records news of the time alongside reports of criminal and civil cases heard at the magistrates court in Wellington. Descriptions of the cases are listed, alongside the nationality of the participants. The greatest amount of civil cases occurred between British settlers and the Maori inhabitants.
