Book Description
This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 21 peer-reviewed technical papers presented at the GeoHunan International Conference: Challenges and Recent Advances in Pavement Technologies and Transportation Geotechnics, which took place in Changsha, Hunan, China, from August 3 to 6, 2009. This proceedings is divided into two sections, Innovative Techniques for Bridge Deck Pavement Design and Construction and New Analysis Techniques and Materials for Portland Cement Concrete Pavement System. Hunan, one of the largest commercial provinces in China, is rapidly developing into a modern epicenter of international finance and trade. Recent construction in many parts of China has provided geotechnical and pavement engineers with great opportunities for creating cutting-edge solutions to problems involving highway and bridge pavements. This publication will be valuable to geotechnical engineers and professionals, as well as construction professionals.

Real-time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction

Real-time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction PDF Author: Robert Otto Rasmussen
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309129419
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 143

Book Description
"TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R06E-RR-1: Real-Time Smoothness Measurements on Portland Cement Concrete Pavements During Construction explores real-time smoothness measuring technologies for concrete paving. For the purposes of the report, real-time smoothness refers to measuring and evaluating the concrete pavement surface profile during construction along the paving train while the concrete surface is still wet. The report also includes draft suggested specifications and guidelines related to the use of technologies that allow paving crews to measure smoothness in real time. The results of Renewal Project R06E will be incorporated into an electronic repository for practitioners, known as the NDToolbox, which will provide information regarding recommended technologies for the detection of a particular deterioration. The NDToolbox is in the process of being created by SHRP 2 Renewal Project R06A, which has released SHRP 2 Report S2-R06A-RR-1: Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration that identifies nondestructive testing technologies for detecting and characterizing common forms of deterioration in concrete bridge decks. Renewal Project R06E, which produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R06E-RR-1, is one of seven follow-on projects to SHRP Renewal Project R06 that produced SHRP 2 Report S2-R06-RW: A Plan for Developing High-Speed, Nondestructive Testing Procedures for Both Design Evaluation and Construction Inspection, which examines existing and emerging nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and their current state of implementation to satisfy the NDE needs for highway renewal."--Publisher description.

Portland Cement Concrete Resurfacing

Portland Cement Concrete Resurfacing PDF Author: Kenneth H. McGhee
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 9780309056625
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 80

Book Description
This synthesis report will be of special interest to pavement designers, materials engineers, and others seeking information on portland cement concrete resurfacings (overlays) placed over both portland and asphalt cement concrete pavements. Information is presented on the various practices in use for the design, material selection, and construction techniques associated with each pavement type. Additional information is provided on resurfacing experience and performance, including an Appendix cataloging more than 700 existing resurfacing projects in North America. Transportation agencies in the United States are continuing to develop pavement management systems which take an objective and structured approach to life-cycle cost analysis requirements for pavement rehabilitation project analysis. This report of the Transportation Research Board also discusses the considerations involved in the selection of technically feasible resurfacing alternatives. Based on the longitudinal experience of 375 resurfacing projects that were cataloged in 1982 and the more than 700 projects identified in 1993, much useful information on the performance characteristics of portland cement concrete resurfacing is presented.

Optimization of Highway Concrete Technology

Optimization of Highway Concrete Technology PDF Author: Mohamad Nagi
Publisher: Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp)
ISBN: 9780309057516
Category : Portland cement
Languages : en
Pages : 275

Book Description
This report provides (1) state-of-the-art information on new developments in portland cement concrete materials and applications to users in the highway agencies, especially young engineers just beginning their careers in the field; and (2) new materials and testing methodologies for a variety of important highway and bridge rehabilitation applications. The report includes a condensation of the state-of-the-art synthesis of concrete highway technology prepared as part of this research project. Descriptions of evaluations of test methods for in-place concrete density with the use of nuclear methods and determination of water content of fresh concrete using microwave drying are also incorporated in the report. The report gives summaries of guidelines for avoiding thermal effects in concrete pavement slab placements and packing-based aggregate proportioning for concrete mixtures. The report contains a detailed description of field evaluations of a variety of concrete mixes used for early opening of full depth concrete pavement repairs and bridge deck overlays. Opening times ranged from 2 to 24 hours. Brief descriptions of the methodology and content of the HWYCON expert system, available from SHRP, are also included. Finally, a description of the contents of audiovisual implementation packages for highway personnel dealing with materials testing and pavement and bridge rehabilitation is included.
