Transforming the Rural Nonfarm Economy

Transforming the Rural Nonfarm Economy PDF Author: Steven Haggblade
Publisher: Intl Food Policy Res Inst
ISBN: 0801886643
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 514

Book Description
Contrary to conventional wisdom that equates rural economies with agriculture, rural residents in developing countries often rely heavily on activities other than farming for their income. Indeed, nonfarm work accounts for between one-third and one-half of rural incomes in the developing world. In recent years, accelerating globalization, increasing competition from large businesses, expanding urban markets for rural goods and services, and greater availability of information and communication technology have combined to expose rural nonfarm businesses to new opportunities as well as new risks. By examining these rapid changes in the rural nonfarm economy, international experts explore how the rural nonfarm economy can contribute to overall economic growth in developing countries and how the poor can participate in this rapidly evolving segment of the economy. The authors review an array of recent studies of the rural nonfarm economy in order to summarize existing empirical evidence, explore policy implications, and identify future research priorities. They examine the varied scale, structure, and composition of the rural nonfarm economy, as well as its relationship with agricultural and urban enterprises. And they address key questions about the role of public intervention in the rural nonfarm economy and how the rural poor can participate in and navigate the rapid transition underway in rural areas. The contributors offer new insights to specialists in rural development and to others interested in overall economic development.

Measuring Underemployment

Measuring Underemployment PDF Author: Clifford C. Clogg
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483276244
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
Measuring Underemployment: Demographic Indicators for the United States discusses the Labor Utilization Framework of Hauser and Sullivan, which is a measurement scheme that posits the existence of three dimensions, or forms, of underemployment— time, income, and skill-utilization. This book describes the conceptual groundwork, operational measurement, and implications of the Labor Utilization Framework on the way the labor force aggregates. The essential elements of the socio-demographic theory of the labor force with the logical unity provided by both the Labor Utilization Framework and the specific methodologies adopted for its analysis are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the methods for latent structure analysis and cohort analysis, including the theory of frictional underemployment; "class structure governing the distribution of labor market rewards; tempo of social change in the labor force; "productive value of a population; and "true dependency on productive labor. This publication is a good source for students and researchers concerned with different labor force topics that can be plausibly studied from the viewpoint of the Hauser-Sullivan framework.

Handbook on Measuring Quality of Employment

Publisher:
ISBN: 9789211170986
Category : Quality of work life
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
Employment is a key driver of social and economic development. It is also at the centre of most people's lives and the quality of an individual's employment is an important element of his or her well-being. At the same time, labour markets are evolving and the conditions of employment are continuously changing, which affects the lives of workers and their households. This development has been accompanied by growing interest in quality of employment and demands from policymakers, governments and researchers for more systematic information on the quality of employment to complement the well-established quantitative labour market indicators. The Framework offers a coherent structure for measuring quality of employment and provides practical guidance for compiling and interpreting a number of proposed indicators.
