Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Seal and Flag of the State of New Hampshire The history of the seal of New Hampshire must necessarily begin with the first establishment of a separate government for the Province, and the assumption of administration by President John Cutt Jan. 1, From the first settlement in 1623 to 1641, during which time only four towns developed into existence, these towns failed to unite in a common govern ment. For many years the inhabitants were so few that an established form of government was not one of the necessities of a safe and orderly life. But with a steady increase in population the need of a code of laws and regulations and a recognized control ling power became manifest. As this necessity did not appear in all the towns at the same time, each dealt with its own affairs as circumstances seemed to require. The grant of New Hampshire to Capt. John Mason was not a charter, and did not convey any power of political government. Tuttle says, in his volume of Historical Papers, 1889, but the grant of so much power as should be necessary to protect his own rights and the rights of his servants, as well as to preserve order, must be understood as implied in the concession made to him. In theabsence of any general government, even of the simplest sort, the several communities or clusters of inhabitants in New Hampshire found themselves compelled at an early period to combine for self protection. Book Description
Excerpt from The State of New Hampshire, Vol. 16: Rolls and Documents Relating to Soldiers in the Revolutionary War; With an Appendix, Embracing Some Indian and French War Rolls The fact that interest in historical research and in the preservation of all original documents pertaining to the days of our ancestors is on the increase among our people is one of the encouraging features of the times. Many valuable manuscripts of ancient dates have been destroyed, and it is important that all that are still in existence Which give any information relative to the history of our State should be printed, and thus placed beyond the reach of destructive elements and the autograph hunter, and made accessible to the future historian. The public interest in and general demand for the work is abundantly proved by frequent calls for the loan of advance sheets of this volume, Which have been in use almost continuously since the commencement of its publication.
