Desperate to escape their influence, and eager for a home, a husband, and a stable life for her children, Nellie decides to make a new life in San Francisco as a mail order bride. Saloon owner Blake Malone is a bachelor and likes it that way. He worked hard for everything he has, but the San Francisco City Council won’t approve his plans to build a family emporium unless he is a family man himself. The solution? A mail order bride from New York who will bring him a ready-made family, stability, and the council's approval. Blake expects his future wife to care for his home and, other than helping him impress the city council, to stay out of his business. He expects life as usual. What he gets is an unexpected desire to win Nellie's heart, a dangerous threat to his new bride, and a rich benefactor determined to steal his new family out from under him. Blake believed his battle for success a hard one. But he will discover that the battle to win Nellie's heart and keep his family safe is going to take everything he's got.

On the Line
Author: Eileen Edwards
Publisher: New Generation Publishing
ISBN: 1787191281
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
‘ON THE LINE’ is a detailed autobiography written by Eileen Edwards about her tennis officiating career, presented almost in diary format over four decades from 1972. Eileen tells of her initial interest in tennis when, in 1987, she joined the British Tennis Umpires Association (BTUA). This game, set and match narrative continues through until 2012 with the Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) as a top tennis official and having served as a member of the Committee of Management. Eileen wrote everything down with meticulous detail throughout her distinguished officiating career, reminiscing details of matches she officiated, including pro-celebrity tournaments and several conversations with officials, players, royalty, celebrities and her beloved, Cliff Richard. What you do find in this book is a very revealing account of the tennis officiating industry. You also get the distinct feeling that writing the book was actually cathartic for Eileen, putting her concerns to print and righting some wrongs with those within the industry. Her book reads like the history of British tennis over the last four decades, and it is a revealing account of the camaraderie, favouritism, in-fighting and back-biting within the tennis association. Sadly, Eileen’s exceptional and eventful career was tinged with bitterness and seems sad that her fantastic experiences and years of devotion to the tennis association would end in such a way. There are stories she tells that will shock you. However, with her three children, also as top tennis officials, there are plenty of amusing stories Eileen tells that will make you laugh and even the odd words with her and her children’s wonderful sense of humour and fun. This book is a really interesting read for any tennis aficionado.

A Wild Promise
Author: Debbie S. Miller
Publisher: Mountaineers Books
ISBN: 9781680511062
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Finalist in Nature The 2.1 million acres (equivalent to Yellowstone National Park) of the wilderness study area are coming under increasing threat by resource development Essays of personal explorations of the region by an award-winning writer are accompanied by dramatic images from an award-winning photographer The wilderness study area is home to the largest concentration of tidewater glaciers in America and hosts a vast diversity of terrestrial and aquatic mammals, birds, and fish It's been said that "a picture is worth a thousand words," and nowhere is that more true than on the pages ofA Wild Promise: Prince William Sound. The images of photographer Hugh Rose show you what this region holds--and what will be lost without protection from future resource development. Alongside Hugh's images are eloquent essays covering the natural and cultural history, people, and fragility of this region by noted Alaskan writer Debbie Miller. Alaska's famed Prince William Sound includes more than 3,000 shore land miles of bays, coves, and deep fjords topped by the ice-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains. More than 1 million tourists visit the region annually, and small family-owned fishing boats, ecotourism, oyster farms, and guide services provide sustainable livelihoods for year-round Alaskan residents. Many Americans first came to know of Prince William Sound through the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989--a catastrophe with lingering long-term effects, such the collapse of the once abundant herring population, a critical fish in the marine food chain. InA Wild Promise, readers travel alongside Hugh and Debbie as they hike and kayak from Columbia Glacier to College Fiord, exploring the Nellie Juan-College Fjord Wilderness Study Area, a region set aside for study in 1980, to be followed--it was hoped--by permanent protection from Congress. After almost four decades of being in limbo as a designated wilderness study area, the fate of this spectacular, wild place is now in our hands. Its protection is a gift we can offer generations to come--a promiseof wilderness, beauty, and natural diversity that we can, indeed, keep.
