Book Description
Excerpt from Nebraskans: 1854-1904 When we reflect that in 18 54, Nebraska was a wilderness or prairie and plain, and that 50 years has seen it transformed into a great commonwealth, teeming with life and industry, and counted one of the foremost of the sisterhood of states, it seems fitting and in keeping with the occasion of this, its golden anniversary, to collect together the portraits of the men who have been so closely identified with the production of this glorious result. Here will be found many of the pioneers as well as those who coming later, have added their quota and are entitled to share in the result achieved for this first half century. The task of getting more than one thousand busy men to give time for special sittings for photographs has not been an easy one. And equally difficult has it been to find pictures of many of the old pioneers, who long since have joined the great majority. And while it is hardly possi ble to make a work of this find complete, we feel that it is a fair representation of the foremost men, who have helped to make Nebraska what it is, and without whom, no history of Nebraska could be written. Whatever may be the value or usefulness of this collection to this generation, it will, we feel, be appreciated as almost priceless by those that follow. History of Nebraska

History of Nebraska PDF Author: James C. Olson
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 9780803286054
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
History of Nebraska was originally created to mark the territorial centennial of Nebraska, and revised to coincide with the statehood centennial. This one-volume history quickly became the standard text for the college student and reference for the general reader, unmatched for three generations. This third edition, which has been thoroughly revised and rewritten while preserving the spirit and intelligence of the original, affirms and extends that record. Incorporating the results of thirty years of scholarship and research, the third edition of History of Nebraska gives fuller attention to such topics as the Native American experience in Nebraska and the accomplishments and circumstances of the state’s women and minorities. It also provides a historical analysis of the state’s dramatic changes in the past thirty years.

Steel Resolve

Steel Resolve PDF Author: Hugh W. Williams
Publisher: Concierge Publishing Svcs.
ISBN: 098205890X
Category : Steel-works
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
Like the meandering Missouri River nearby, the riveting history of Drake-Williams Steel flows through 125 years of the American industrial revolution mostly under the direction of one family with three sets of brothers. The venerable Hugh Williams joined a fledgling boiler company in 1897 about the time of the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. His sons Arthur and Walter operated the company through the Great Depression in an era of dragline buckets, boilers, and tanks. The company had built the largest and tallest smokestack and was proud of it. Arthur s sons Hugh (the author of this book) and Mike grew the company into the era of structural steel fabrication through boom-and-bust times in the construction industry. Today the company continues to expand under the able leadership of Hugh s sons David and John as Drake-Williams Steel supplies structural steel to help fuel Omaha's and the Midwest's upward growth and quite literally provides the framework for many of the area's most prominent buildings. This is not the story of buildings and structures, but of the strength and fortitude of strong men (and a few women) in a business that celebrates its 125th anniversary and has no intention of slowing down.
