Book Description
Excerpt from Appendix to the Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage: And of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833; Including the Reports of Commander, Now Captain, James Clark Ross, R. N., F. R. S., F. L. S., &C., And the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole The narrative of my late voyage in search of a north-west passage, having been increased in its length far beyond my expectations, it became necessary to reserve for the Appendix every thing which did not actually belong to the work itself. I have to regret, therefore, that matter of much importance to myself has consequently been postponed; among which I may mention the two following letters, which having been already published in the newspapers, for the purpose of showing to the public that I was not ungrateful for the sympathy so universally manifested towards me and my companions. I had, indeed, deemed them an unnecessary addition to the narrative itself, but certainly not without the intention of again gratifying my feelings by publishing them, and some others, a second time, in justice to myself and to those whose humane endeavours cannot be too often or too fully acknowledged. Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Northwest Passage

Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Northwest Passage PDF Author: Alan Day
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 081086519X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 475

Book Description
The Northwest Passage was repeatedly sought for over four centuries. From the first attempt in the late 15th century to Roald Amundsen's famous voyage of 1903-1906 where the feat was first accomplished to expeditions in the late 1940s by the Mounties to discover an even more northern route, author Alan Day covers all aspects of the ongoing quest that excited the imagination of the world. This compendium of explorers, navigators, and expeditions tackles this broad topic with a convenient, but extensive cross-referenced dictionary. A chronology traces the long succession of treks to find the passage, the introduction helps explain what motivated them, and the bibliography provides a means for those wishing to discover more information on this exciting subject.

Imagining the Arctic

Imagining the Arctic PDF Author: Huw Lewis-Jones
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1786732467
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
Imagining the Arctic explores the culture and politics of polar exploration and the making of its heroes. Leading explorers, the celebrity figures of their day, went to great lengths to convince their contemporaries of the merits of polar voyages. Much of exploration was in fact theatre: a series of performances to capture public attention and persuade governments to finance ambitious proposals. The achievements of explorers were promoted, celebrated, and manipulated, whilst explorers themselves became the subject of huge attention. Huw Lewis-Jones draws upon recovered texts and striking images, many reproduced for the first time since the nineteenth century, to show how exploration was projected through a series of spectacular visuals, helping us to reconstruct the ways that heroes and the wilderness were imagined. Elegantly written and richly illustrated, Imagining the Arctic offers original insights into our understanding of exploration and its pull on the public imagination.
