The notes contain data on collections, observations and detailed descriptions of fungi observed in the field, and description and identification of specimens. Localities are mainly in the United States, especially Vermont and New York State, and focus primarily on the fungi genera Lactarius and Russula. There are numerous small drawings throughout the notes. Gertrude Burlingham (1872-1952) was a mycologist and specialist in the genera Lactarius and Russula. She worked as a biology teacher, and pursued a parallel, unpaid career as a mycologist, making significant contributions to the field.
