The Flow and Interference Effects of a Body of Revolution and Its Stabilizing Surfaces when at an Angle of Attack

The Flow and Interference Effects of a Body of Revolution and Its Stabilizing Surfaces when at an Angle of Attack PDF Author: E. J. Rodgers

Book Description
The flow over a body of revolution and its stabilizing surfaces, at an angle of attack, was studied in order to obtain a better understanding of the real flow effects as well as the interference effects between components of the configuration. The velocity field about the configuration, the surface flow, and the pressure distribution were obtained with the model mounted in the wind tunnel of the Ordnance Research Laboratory. Analysis of data showed there is an increase in lift on the body and a decrease in lift on the stabilizing surfaces from that of the isolated components at the same incidence to the flow. The interference effects between components is evidenced by the surface flows and pressure distribution calculated from the measured velocity field. The decreased lift on the stabilizing surfaces is clearly related to the flow over the aft part of the body. (Author).

Aircraft Design Concepts

Aircraft Design Concepts PDF Author: James DeLaurier
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 135185531X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 591

Book Description
Aircraft Design Concepts: An Introductory Course introduces the principles of aircraft design through a quantitative approach developed from the author’s extensive experience in teaching aircraft design. Building on prerequisite courses, the text develops basic design skills and methodologies, while also explaining the underlying physics. The book uses a historical approach to examine a wide range of aircraft types and their design. Numerous charts, photos, and illustrations are provided for in-depth view of aeronautical engineering. It addresses conventional tail-aft monoplanes, "flying-wing", biplane, and canard configurations. Providing detailed analysis of propeller performance, the book starts with simple blade-element theory and builds to the Weick method. Written for senior undergraduate and graduate students taking a single-semester course on Aircraft Design or Aircraft Performance, the book imparts both the technical knowledge and creativity needed for aircraft design.
