It has always operated under the administrative supervision of the Division of Community Service Programs of the Werk Projects Administration. By act of Congress, Federal Project No. 1. Of which the Historical Records Survey was a unit, was abolished as a Federally sponsored project on August 31, 1939. At this time the units of the project went under local sponsorship by the State Administrative Board of the State of Michigan.
