Soloistic English Horn Literature from 1736-1984

Soloistic English Horn Literature from 1736-1984 PDF Author: William Wallace McMullen
Publisher: Pendragon Press
ISBN: 9780918728784
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
New York Times critic Harold Schonberg once commented that solo concerti for the English horn are as rare as fish with fur. Indeed, the common impression is that works composed specifically for the instrument are few and far between . However, William McMullen's thematic catalogue admirably refutes this notion, with 200 works that are originally written for a soloistic English horn; works that allow the player an opportunity to illustrate the instrument's unique expressive qualities in a solo setting. Each entry in the catalogue is divided into two main parts - one dealing with information about the composer, and the other supplying details about the work (instrumentation; date and place of composition/publication; numbers, titles and timings of movements; first performance dates; comments from the composer; and a description of any unusual technical demands upon the soloist). Thematic incipits are also included.

The Oboe

The Oboe PDF Author: Geoffrey Vernon Burgess
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300093179
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
The oboe, including its earlier forms the shawm and the hautboy, is an instrument with a long and rich history. In this book two distinguished oboist-musicologists trace that history from its beginnings to the present time, discussing how and why the oboe evolved, what music was written for it, and which players were prominent. Geoffrey Burgess and Bruce Haynes begin by describing the oboe’s prehistory and subsequent development out of the shawm in the mid-seventeenth century. They then examine later stages of the instrument, from the classical hautboy to the transition to a keyed oboe and eventually the Conservatoire-system oboe. The authors consider the instrument’s place in Romantic and Modernist music and analyze traditional and avant-garde developments after World War II. Noting the oboe’s appearance in paintings and other iconography, as well as in distinctive musical contexts, they examine what this reveals about the instrument’s social function in different eras. Throughout the book they discuss the great performers, from the pioneers of the seventeenth century to the traveling virtuosi of the eighteenth, the masters of the romantic period and the legends of the twentieth century such as Gillet, Goossens, Tabuteau, and Holliger. With its extensive illustrations, useful technical appendices, and discography, this is a comprehensive and authoritative volume that will be the essential companion for every woodwind student and performer.

An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Music for Oboe, Oboe D'amore and English Horn Found in the Canadian Music Centre

An Annotated Bibliography of Canadian Music for Oboe, Oboe D'amore and English Horn Found in the Canadian Music Centre PDF Author: Sarah J. Hamilton
Publisher: Ann Arbor, Mich. : University Microfilms International
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
Abstract: Music for oboe, oboe d'amore and English horn by Canadian composers is not generally well-known in the oboe playing community. Specific descriptive information is needed to facilitate the performance and study of Canadian works. In this bibliography, fifty-five works for oboe, oboe d'amore, and English horn alone, with piano, organ or tape, with orchestra (when piano reductions were available), and in like ensembles, were closely examined for style and level of difficulty. Information concerning date of composition, duration, premiere, dedication, and commission was also sought. The study was limited to works deposited in the Canadian Music Centre because of the ready availability of the collection. Additional works are listed in the appendices.

The Adjustment of the Oboe and English Horn

The Adjustment of the Oboe and English Horn PDF Author: David N. Greenwald
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The oboe and its lower-pitched relative, the English horn, each have about 25 small screws that regulate how easily and well the instrument plays. The protocols for 'adjusting'-finding the proper position for-each screw are unique to each screw, and small errors can make the instrument hard to play or even unplayable. As a result, most players find the process of adjustment daunting.'The Adjustment of the Oboe and English Horn' guides the reader through all the protocols and diagnostic tests players need to adjust their instruments. With the aid of high-quality color illustrations, the book offers generous, complete instructions for adjusting each screw, as well as a wealth of 'playing tests,' several developed by the author himself, to help the player troubleshoot. Where helpful, the mechanism of the keywork regulated by an adjustment screw is explained; and, where relevant, differences among the mechanisms of different makers' instruments are addressed. Although adjustment has occasionally been the subject of chapters in general instrument maintenance books or of pamphlets, 'The Adjustment of the Oboe and English Horn' offers the first book-length treatment of the subject. For the first time in the history of the oboe and English horn, players have a reference work to which to turn to obtain all the guidance they need to get an instrument ready for a challenging performance.''The Adjustment of the Oboe and English Horn' is a major contribution to our field. With its detailed, step-by-step approach, this book is both a how-to for students and an important reference for professionals.'-Ryan Roberts, New York Philharmonic; From the Foreword by David Teitelbaum:'Players often tell me they'd like to adjust their own instruments but have no idea how to acquire the skills. This manual offers those players a perfect place for gaining the knowledge of adjustments they need to keep their instruments in good working order. It is authoritative and comprehensive, and it offers clear, step-by-step procedures and illustrations. I am not aware of a guide that addresses adjustment of both oboe and English horn so thoroughly.'
