Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment

Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment PDF Author: GJ Breyley
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317336798
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
The word motreb finds its roots in the Arabic verb taraba, meaning ‘to make happy.’ Originally denoting all musicians in Iran, motrebi came to be associated, pejoratively, with the cheerful vulgarity of the lowbrow entertainer. In Iranian Music and Popular Entertainment, GJ Breyley and Sasan Fatemi examine the historically overlooked motrebi milieu, with its marginalized characters, from luti to gardan koloft and mashti, as well as the tenacity of motreb who continued their careers against all odds. They then turn to losanjelesi, the most pervasive form of Iranian popular music that developed as motrebi declined, and related musical forms in Iran and its diasporic popular cultural centre, Los Angeles. For the first time in English, the book makes available musical transcriptions, analysis and lyrics that illustrate the complexities of this history. As it presents the findings of the authors’ years of ethnographic work with the history’s protagonists, from senior motreb to pop-rock stars, the book reveals parallels between the decline of motrebi and the rise of ‘modernity.’ In the twentieth century, the fate of Tehran’s motrebi music was shaped by the social and urban polarization that ensued from the modern market economy, and losanjelesi would be similarly affected by transnational relations, revolution, war and migration. Through its detailed and informed examination of Iranian popular music, this study reveals much about the values and anxieties of Iranian society, and is a valuable resource for students and scholars of Iranian society and history.

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Iran’s particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E. Lucas argues that this music is a modern phenomenon indelibly tied to changing notions of Iran’s national history. Rather than considering a single Persian music history, Lucas demonstrates cultural dissimilarity and discontinuity over time, bringing to light two different notions of music-making in relation to premodern and modern musical norms. An important corrective to the history of Persian music, Music of a Thousand Years is the first work to align understandings of Middle Eastern music history with current understandings of the region’s political history.

A Persian Ode

A Persian Ode PDF Author: Margaret Caton
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781736873625
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
A Persian Ode provides glimpses of what European travelers saw and heard of Persian music during the Safavid through Qajar eras in Iran (1501-1925), whether it be of singing in the desert night, the sounds of the caravan, salutations to the sun, chamber music and dance in the royal court, or songs to accompany and direct the colors and designs of rug weaving. Rather than presenting an analysis of Persian music or a chronology of its historical development during this period, this work shares eyewitness accounts of multiple genres of Persian music written by over 50 English and French visitors. As well, selected memoirs by Iranians offer first-hand descriptions and anecdotes of music and dance practices among the late Qajar courtiers and aristocracy. In addition to including textual descriptions of musical performance in a variety of settings, this work is illustrated by travelers' sketches and photos as well as by photos from the Qajar royal photo album. Reference to recorded musical examples for selected genres are linked to an accompanying album for this book from the author's Persian music field collection.
