Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer. Benson's first book published was Sketches From Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, which featured a scathing description of composer and militant suffragette Ethel Smyth (which she "gleefully acknowledged", according to actress Prunella Scales), with the same cast of characters a generation later: Dodo the Second (1914), "a unique chronicle of the pre-1914 Bright Young Things" and Dodo Wonders (1921), "a first-hand social history of the Great War in Mayfair and the Shires".

Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist and short story writer, known professionally as E. F. Benson. Benson's first book was Sketches From Marlborough (1888). He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), and he followed it with a variety of satire and romantic melodrama. The Mapp and Lucia series, written relatively late in his career, consists of six novels and three short stories. The novels are: Queen Lucia (1920), Lucia in London (1927), Miss Mapp (1922) (including the short story The Male Impersonator), Mapp and Lucia (1931), Lucia's Progress (1935) and Trouble for Lucia (1939). Benson was also known as a writer of ghost stories, which frequently appear in collections, and of a series of biographies/autobiographies and memoirs, including one of Charlotte Bronte. His last book, delivered to his publisher ten days before his death, was an autobiography entitled Final Edition (1940). His works also include: Michael (1916) and Crescent and Iron Cross (1918).

Samuel Hopkins Adams (January 26, 1871 - November 16, 1958) was an American writer, best known for his investigative journalism and muckraking. From 1891 to 1900, he was a reporter for the New York Sun where his career began, and then joined McClure's Magazine, where he gained a reputation as a muckraker for his articles on the conditions of public health in the United States. In 1904, Adams became an editorial staffer with McClure's Magazine working with Lincoln Steffens, Ida Tarbell, and Ray Stannard Baker. Adams considered himself a freelance writer and used his writings to support himself. In 1905, Adams was hired by Collier's to prepare articles on patent medicines.
