Moving Beyond Borders

Moving Beyond Borders PDF Author: Karen Flynn
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442663634
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 329

Book Description
Moving Beyond Borders is the first book-length history of Black health care workers in Canada, delving into the experiences of thirty-five postwar-era nurses who were born in Canada or who immigrated from the Caribbean either through Britain or directly to Canada. Karen Flynn examines the shaping of these women's stories from their childhoods through to their roles as professionals and community activists. Flynn interweaves oral histories with archival sources to show how these women's lives were shaped by their experiences of migration, professional training, and family life. Theoretical analyses from postcolonial, gender, and diasporic Black Studies serve to highlight the multiple subjectivities operating within these women's lives. By presenting a collective biography of identity formation, Moving Beyond Borders reveals the extraordinary complexity of Black women's history.

Ambition in America

Ambition in America PDF Author: Jeffrey A. Becker
Publisher: University Press of Kentucky
ISBN: 0813145066
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
One of the largest southern cities and a hub for the cotton industry, Memphis, Tennessee, was at the forefront of black political empowerment during the Jim Crow era. Compared to other cities in the South, Memphis had an unusually large number of African American voters. Black Memphians sought reform at the ballot box, formed clubs, ran for office, and engaged in voter registration and education activities from the end of the Civil War through the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954. In this groundbreaking book, Elizabeth Gritter examines how and why black Memphians mobilized politically in the period between Reconstruction and the beginning of the civil rights movement. Gritter illuminates, in particular, the efforts and influence of Robert R. Church Jr., an affluent Republican and founder of the Lincoln League, and the notorious Memphis political boss Edward H. Crump. Using these two men as lenses through which to view African American political engagement, this volume explores how black voters and their leaders both worked with and opposed the white political machine at the ballot box. River of Hope challenges persisting notions of a "Solid South" of white Democratic control by arguing that the small but significant number of black southerners who retained the right to vote had more influence than scholars have heretofore assumed. Gritter's nuanced study presents a fascinating view of the complex nature of political power during the Jim Crow era and provides fresh insight into the efforts of the individuals who laid the foundation for civil rights victories in the 1950s and '60s.

Ambition

Ambition PDF Author: Alpha A. Timbo
Publisher: FriesenPress
ISBN: 1525524089
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
In this increasingly cynical world, the word “ambitious” has become synonymous with greed, and a lust for fame or power. This misconception, whether adopted consciously or unconsciously, has trapped countless generations in mediocrity, keeping entire families and communities from ever thriving, cultivating their inherent potential, or changing the world (and themselves) for the better. This book breaks down ambition into its constituent parts, and teaches us how to take advantage of our own potential for change, moving beyond the limits we have always believed to be true, and stepping outside of mediocrity. We are designed to excel, and the obstacles and challenges we face in life are there to teach us and propel us forward. Without the rain that falls, a seed will never reach beyond its small protective shell to become something amazing, adding beauty or shelter or sustenance to the world. By harnessing our ambition, in its purest form, we can break out of those shells that hold us back, and finally grow into whatever it is we were always meant to become.

Strangers Next Door?

Strangers Next Door? PDF Author: Tim Lindsey
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1509918175
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 488

Book Description
There are no two neighbouring countries anywhere in the world that are more different than Indonesia and Australia. They differ hugely in religion, language, culture, history, geography, race, economics, worldview and population (Indonesia, 270 million, Australia less than 10 per cent of that). In fact, Indonesia and Australia have almost nothing in common other than the accident of geographic proximity. This makes their relationship turbulent, volatile and often unpredictable. Strangers Next Door? brings together insiders and leading observers to critically assess the state of Australia–Indonesia relations and their future prospects, offering insights into why the relationship is so important for Australia, why it is so often in crisis, and what this means for the future. This book will be of interest to anyone concerned with the Indo-Pacific region, Southeast Asia, Australia and Indonesia, and each country's politics, economy and foreign policy. It contains chapters that will interest specialists but are written in a style accessible to a general audience. The book spans a diverse range of subjects, including political relations and diplomacy, security and defence, the economy and trade, Islam, education, development, the arts, legal cooperation, the media, women, and community ties. Contributors assess the current state of relations in their sphere of expertise, and outline the factors and policies that could shape bilateral ties – and Indonesia's future – over the coming decades. University of Melbourne scholars Tim Lindsey and Dave McRae, both prominent observers and commentators on Indonesia and its relations with Australia, edited the volume, providing a synthesising overview as well as their own thematic chapters.
