Book Description
From the mid-1700s to the early 1900s, farming was the principal occupation in the area that would become Mt. Lebanon. When the federal government placed an excise tax on whiskey in 1794, area farmers protested in what became known as the Whiskey Rebellion. The 1901 arrival of the streetcar began transforming the area from a rural countryside to a modern suburban community. Within a few months of the streetcar's arrival, the first real estate subdivision, the Mt. Lebanon Plan, was laid out, and by 1905, no less than 11 subdivisions had been approved. When the Liberty Tunnels opened in 1924, Mt. Lebanon's population exploded, and the community became a premier example of the modern automobile suburb.

Book Description
Cemeteries hold a special significance in African American culture because they provide an important and elusive link in tracing African heritage. This 150th Anniversary commemorative booklet provides a unique glimpse into some of the individuals that are laid to rest within the folds of Lebanon Cemetery, the largest and one of the oldest African American cemeteries located in York County, Pennsylvania. Historically, York City's black families had very limited choices when it came to burying their loved ones. With the purpose of creating a space to bury their loved ones with dignity and respect, York's black community came together and on August 26, 1872, the Lebanon Cemetery Company was chartered by nine men who came from different backgrounds and different church bodies. Once chartered, the original managers purchased nearly 2 acres of land at the rate of $500.00 per acre at a site about 3/4 of a mile north of the city. This was the beginning of Lebanon Cemetery. The cemetery was consecrated on November 3, 1872. Over the next 30 years, the cemetery grounds were expanded with the purchase of more small parcels, bringing it to today's total size of just under 5 acres containing approximately 3,800 persons. Today it remains the final resting place of some of York's earliest African American pioneers. And it is an enduring testament to their history.

Book Description
Using a variety of anthropological approaches, the authors illustrate how the Jewish identity has persisted in the United States despite great subcultural variation and a wide range of adaptations. Within the various essays, attention is given to both mainstream Jews and to the Hasidim, Yemenites, Indian Sephardim, Soviet Emigres, and "Jews for Jesus." Institutions such as the family, the school, and the synagogue, are considered through techniques of participation/ observation and in archeological research. Persistence and Flexibility provides a means of viewing the Jewish community through the prism of key events, or rituals, and symbols.
