In New Zealand, cows are usually milked Twice A Day (TAD). But Once A Day milking (OAD) has become more and more practised recently. Research has been done in order to improve the knowledge of this system and to select the dairy cattle that is the most suitable to OAD milking. A 2004-2005 trial that involved 144 friesan cows was carried out at Dexcel. These animals were milked OAD or TAD from calving, but the TAD herd switched to OAD in January. Furthermore, they were allocated to a high or low milksolids (fat + protein) content groups based on the cows' results from the previous year or the heifers' genetic potential. Because Jersey cows, with concentrated milk, perform better on OAD milking than Friesians with less concentrated milk, i twas thought that the same results might occur within the Friesian breed. Analyses of Variance were used to compare the performances of the groups. In this trial, high milksolids content cows didn't seem to be better suited to OAD milking. No major significant differences concerning milk and milksolids yields were found between the high and low milksolids content animals. Some differences for the milk of cows milked once or twice a day were shown : OAD cows produce lower milk and milsolids yields and their milk contains more somatic cells. The change from TAD to OAD milking was followed by a decline in milk and milksolids yields, which quickly dropped to the OAD herd level. Unfortunately, there was no carry over from the TAD level. The udder capacity of each animal was measured three times throughout the lactation. It tended to be larger in November and January for cows milked TAD and for low milksolids content cows. Curves were fitted to the milk production of each cow. Although it is difficult to determine accurately the day of the peak milk yield, it is easier to find out peak milk yield. It appeared that TAD cows produce more mil kat peak than OAD. Low milksolids content cows with less concentrated milk have a higher peak yield than high milksolids content cows.
