Ce travail réalise une synthèse des connaissances du programme de recherche PIREN Seine concernant la problématique de l’azote sur le bassin du Grand Morin (1200 km2). A cet effet, la plate-forme de modélisation CAWAQS (CAtchment WAter Quality Simulator) a été construite. CAWAQS simule la qualité de l'eau des différents compartiments d'un bassin versant : sols, aquifères, cours d'eau. Il a été construit à partir des modèles STICS, NEWSAM et ProSe. L'utilisation conjointe de techniques géostatistiques (logiciel Isatis®) et de CAWAQS a permis de dresser un etat de la contamination en nitrate des aquifères sur la période 1977-1996. La confrontation des concentrations de nitrate simulées en rivière avec des observations à haute fréquence sur la période 1991-1996 permet l'estimation des capacités dénitrifiantes. On estime sur la période 1991-1996, que les nitrates infiltrés à la base de la zone racinaire (4 000 tN.an-1) sont exportés vers l'aval par le réseau hydrographique (41 %), stockés dans les aquifères (39%) et éliminés par dénitrification (20 %) dans les zones humides, les nappes alluviales, la zone hyporhéique, et par les processus benthiques en rivière.Des campagnes de terrain et des simulations numériques ont aussi été réalisées à l’aval du Grand Morin afin de prendre en compte les processus dominants dans la transformation des polluants pour les cours d'eau à faible profondeur. Les résultats obtenus suggèrent l’existence d’une forte élimination de l'azote ammoniacal par nitrification-dénitrification dans les compartiments benthiques. Pour l'ensemble du Grand Morin, la quantité d'azote éliminée par ce processus a été estimée à 140 tN.an-1..

This open access book reviews the water-agro-food and socio-eco-system of the Seine River basin (76,000 km2), and offers a historical perspective on the river’s long-term contamination. The Seine basin is inhabited by circa 17 million people and is impacted by intensive agricultural practices and industrial activities. These pressures have gradually affected its hydrological, chemical and ecological functioning, leading to a maximum chemical degradation between the 1960s and the 1990s. Over the last three decades, while major water-quality improvements have been observed, new issues (e.g. endocrine disruptors, microplastics) have also emerged. The state of the Seine River network, from the headwaters to estuary, is increasingly controlled by the balance between pressures and social responses. This socio-ecosystem provides a unique example of the functioning of a territory under heavy anthropogenic pressure during the Anthropocene era. The achievements made were possible due to the long-term PIREN Seine research program, established in 1989 and today part of the French socio-ecological research network “Zones Ateliers”, itself part of the international Long-term Socio-economic and Ecological Research Network (LTSER). Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introduction to the water budget and the territorial metabolism of the Seine basin, and studies the trajectories and impact of various pollutants in the Seine River. It offers insights into the ecological functioning, the integration of agricultural practices, the analysis of aquatic organic matter, and the evolution of fish assemblages in the Seine basin, and also presents research perspectives and approaches to improve the water quality of the Seine River. L'évaluation des actions de reconquête de la qualité de l'eau, notamment en ce qui conceme l'azote, peut passer par une étape de modélisation. Des hypothèses simples de fonctionnement des bassins versants ont ainsi été posées et un modèle hydrologique distribué, TNT, a été développé. Divers tests de TNT ont été effectués sur le bassin de Kervidy (Morbihan), et sur des bassins virtuels simples, aux géomorphologies contrastées: sensibilité aux paramètres et hypothèses; simulation du débit, de la profondeur de la nappe... Le domaine de validité de TNT regroupe les petits bassins versants agricoles, aux sols relativement perméables sur substrat imperméable, avec une nappe peu profonde, en climat tempéré humide. Après intégration de différents modules de transferts et transformations d'azote, TNT à été utilisé pour chercher à répondre à trois grands types de questions. L'influence de la localisation des cultures sur les flux d'azote a été étudiée. Les résultats de simulations simples, par couplage avec le modèle agronomique STICS, suggèrent que l'interposition d'une culture sous-fertilisée entre la rivière et une culture sur-fertilisée permet de limiter la pollution de la rivière. Les temps de transtert au sein d'un versant ont ensuite été simulés. Le versant étudié présente une forte inertie face aux transferts d'azote, et le modèle est sensible à la localisation de la fertilisation. Enfin, le lien entre géomorphologie et dénitrification a été étudié, ce qui a permis de vérifier la possiblité d'intégration de transformation d'azote à TNT et l'obtention de réponses spatiales différentes selon la morphologie des bassins. L'utilisation de TNT pour la caractérisation de bassins versants peut être envisagée, mais, actuellement, TNT doit être considéré comme un modèle d'analyse et d'aide à la recherche et non comme un modèle opérationnel de prédiction. Il est à utiliser avec précaution, avec des objectifs précis, dans un cadre de recherche et d'analyse de scénarios.

Let me therefore acknowledge properly, at the very beginning, the gratitude of all the participants to the NATO Science Committee for its generous support and worthwhile goal of bringing together scientists of many countries to communicate and share their experiences. On the other hand this volume is also, and probably more so, a Textbook that fills a gap in the field of unsaturated flow. Many treatises on the subject present the theory in its different aspects. Hardly any explain in details how the different pieces can be put together to address realistic problems at the basin scale. The various invited contributions to the ARW were structured in a subject progression much as chapters are organized in a book. The intent of the ARW was to assess the current state of knowledge in "Unsaturated Flow" and its use in "Hydrologic Modeling Practice". In a sense the interest in fundamentals of unsaturated flow in this ARW was not just for the sake of knowledge but also and primarily for the sake of action. Can such fundamental knowledge be utilized for better management of the water resource? was the basic question.
