Facing Global Environmental Change

Facing Global Environmental Change PDF Author: Hans Günter Brauch
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540684883
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1546

Book Description
The year 2007 could perhaps accurately be described as the year when climate change finally received the attention that this challenge deserves globally. Much of the information and knowledge that was created in this field during the year was the result of the findings of the Fourth - sessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which were disseminated on a large scale and reported extensively by the media. This was the result not only of a heightened interest on the part of the public on various aspects of climate change, but also because the IPCC itself proactively attempted to spread the findings of its AR4 to the public at large. The interest generated on the scientific realities of climate change was further enhanced by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC and former Vice President of the US, Al Gore. By taking this decision in favour of a leader who has done a great deal to create awareness on c- mate change, and a body that assesses all scientific aspects of climate change and disseminates the result of its findings, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has clearly drawn the link between climate change and peace in the world.

Localized Global Economies on the Northern Borderlands of Mexico and Morocco

Localized Global Economies on the Northern Borderlands of Mexico and Morocco PDF Author: Antonio Trinidad Requena
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319965891
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
This comparative study examines the processes of development and the configurations of export industries in northern Morocco and on the northern border of Mexico. As the contributors explore the similar characteristics of these two borders, they also examine how the global economy circulates around “places of production”—sites advantageous to the development of export industries. Focusing on transnational firms and the working conditions, settlement processes, and migratory flows they engender, this volume considers if a convergence toward a global culture is inevitable in places of production, or if local resistance emerges in response to the impact of the global.

Green Encounters

Green Encounters PDF Author: Luis Antonio Vivanco
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1845455045
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
Since the 1970s and 1980s, Monte Verde, Costa Rica has emerged as one of the most renowned sites of nature conservation and ecotourism in Costa Rica, and some would argue, Latin America. It has received substantial attention in literature and media on tropical conservation, sustainable development, and tourism. Yet most of that analysis has uncritically evaluated the Monte Verde phenomenon, using celebratory language and barely scratching the surface of the many-faceted socio-cultural transformations provoked by and accompanying environmentalism. Because of its stature, Monte Verde represents an ideal case study to examine the socio-cultural and political complexities and dilemmas of practicing environmentalism in rural Costa Rica. Based on many years of close observation, this book offers rich and original material on the ongoing struggles between environmental activists and of collective and oppositional politics to Monte Verde's new "culture of nature."

The Next Global Stage

The Next Global Stage PDF Author: Ken'ichi Ōmae
Publisher: Wharton School Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
A radically new world is taking shape from the ashes of yesterday's nation-based economic world. To succeed, you'll need to act on a global stage - and master entirely new rules about the sources of economic power and the drivers of growth. In The Global Stage, legendary business strategist Kenichi Ohmae synthesizes today's emerging trends into the first coherent view of tomorrow's global economy, and its implications for politics, business, and personal success. As important as Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations, as fascinating and relevant as Friedman's The Lexus and the Olive Tree, this book doesn't just explain what's happened: it prepares you for what will happen next.
