Miracles, Mystics, Mathematicians PDF Author: Sasho Kalajdzievski
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000985954
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 233

Book Description
Miracles, Mystics, Mathematicians: Searching for Deep Reality focuses on the lives and writings of some of history’s most influential mathematicians and the impact that their mystical beliefs had on their lives and on their mathematical work. Modern biographers often cleanse the lives of renowned scientists of any hint of mysticism or occultism. Such threads are sometimes regarded as relics of the superstitious past; flaws that need to be hushed up, marginalized, or reinterpreted. This book represents a minor attempt to push back against this tendency and to examine these aspects of the history of mathematics with seriousness and intellectual curiosity. Features A breadth of scope covering many centuries Suitable for anyone interested in mathematics, history, philosophy, paranormal phenomena, psi-research, mysticism, or in any combination of the above An almost unique account of known histories, examined from a new vantage point Sasho Kalajdzievski is a Senior Scholar in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba.

The Social Relations of Physics, Mysticism, and Mathematics

The Social Relations of Physics, Mysticism, and Mathematics PDF Author: S. Restivo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400970587
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
The problems I address in this book are among the least studied in the soci ology of science and knowledge. Part I is a critique of the claim that there are parallels between ancient mysticism and modern physics, and a sociological analysis of this claim as a strategy in intellectual conflict. This study must. ultimately be rooted more firmly in a: type of sociology of knowledge that is just now beginning to crystallize (and which I discuss in Chapter 7), and a sociology of religion that is not so much unknown as underground, and timid, that is, a non-worshipful materialist sociology of religion. My study of physics-mysticism parallelism is a vehicle for exploring epistemic strategies. I thus conclude Part I by sketching a materialist, emancipatory epistemic strategy. My conclusion brings together a number of ideas formulated by myself and others over the past several years, but stops short of a systematic synthesis. A more integrated and coherent "model" than what I can sketch here must wait on the results of research now in progress in the critical (as opposed to apologetic or worshipful) sociology of knowledge.

Naming Infinity

Naming Infinity PDF Author: Loren Graham
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674032934
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
In 1913, Russian imperial marines stormed an Orthodox monastery at Mt. Athos, Greece, to haul off monks engaged in a dangerously heretical practice known as Name Worshipping. Exiled to remote Russian outposts, the monks and their mystical movement went underground. Ultimately, they came across Russian intellectuals who embraced Name Worshipping—and who would achieve one of the biggest mathematical breakthroughs of the twentieth century, going beyond recent French achievements. Loren Graham and Jean-Michel Kantor take us on an exciting mathematical mystery tour as they unravel a bizarre tale of political struggles, psychological crises, sexual complexities, and ethical dilemmas. At the core of this book is the contest between French and Russian mathematicians who sought new answers to one of the oldest puzzles in math: the nature of infinity. The French school chased rationalist solutions. The Russian mathematicians, notably Dmitri Egorov and Nikolai Luzin—who founded the famous Moscow School of Mathematics—were inspired by mystical insights attained during Name Worshipping. Their religious practice appears to have opened to them visions into the infinite—and led to the founding of descriptive set theory. The men and women of the leading French and Russian mathematical schools are central characters in this absorbing tale that could not be told until now. Naming Infinity is a poignant human interest story that raises provocative questions about science and religion, intuition and creativity.

From Math Teacher to Mystic

From Math Teacher to Mystic PDF Author: Kelley Baeza
Publisher: Balboa Press
ISBN:
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 111

Book Description
This mesmerizing and inspiring memoir describes many profound and unbelievable experiences of the author, Kelley Baeza, as well as her struggle as a high school mathematics teacher, to understand and to integrate the extraordinary phenomena. Months after abandoning a PhD dissertation and beginning an Ashtanga yoga practice in 2007, mystical and psychic phenomena began. With no religious or spiritual background to view the extraordinary experiences, Kelley was continuously wondering if she was making them up or going crazy. She embarked on a quest to learn about awakening and spirituality to try to understand what was happening as premonitions, out-of-body experiences, plant spirit communications, seeing and hearing Divine Masters and other spiritually transformative events occurred. In From Math Teacher to Mystic, Kelley shares numerous spiritual experiences including a premonition that resulted in her saving a drowning child, a spontaneous healing of chronic pain from an auto accident, accounts with thousands of dollars materializing, and being enveloped in the sensation of being loved and taken care of. Ultimately, the plethora of these experiences along with the wisdom gained from many trips to India, retreats, spiritual teachers, meditations and books, quieted her mind. Trust and faith developed in the Universal Intelligence guiding her and led her to the discovery of a life filled with inner peace, calm and contentedness even in challenging times. The author states: “I want my readers to be • inspired, • encouraged, • uplifted, • entertained, • and determined to build their own connection. Others will be • reminded of their experiences/synchronicities, • curious to learn more, • and optimistic that life in a peaceful state is possible. My hope is that From Math Teacher to Mystic brings my readers joy, causing them to smile throughout their being.”.

The Dynamic Concepts of Philosophical Mathematics

The Dynamic Concepts of Philosophical Mathematics PDF Author: Anthony Ugochukwu O. Aliche
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1475961936
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 869

Book Description
In The Dynamic Concept of Philosophical Mathematics, author Anthony Ugochukwu O. Aliche delves deeply into a comprehensive discussion into the intertwined relationship between philosophy and mathematics. Aliche begins by defining philosophical mathematics and traces its origins and its branches. He then relates the concept to the worlds of science, engineering, technology, creative and applied arts, and human existence. In this systemic, practical and research-driven work, Aliche presents innovative interpretations of mathematical and philosophical issues and reexamines their relevance and applicability to modern developments. He also proposes abolishing most ancient and primordial mathematical policies and formulas, as they are not helping the world of science and technology to grow. Presenting principles, practices, and theories, The Dynamic Concept of Philosophical Mathematics demystifies the oracle of mathematics and communicates that knowledge is power and must therefore be progressive. He equally insisted that the progressive nature of knowledge which must be God-driven fundamentally fulcrumed the demystification of QED which he replaced with the Infinitude Method which scientifically agrees with the progressive dynamism of knowledge. "A product of seasoned scholarship, natural wisdom, empirical research, and inspired originality. It is perhaps one of the most sophisticated intellectual inputs to the world of knowledge"
