Book Description
This is the daily journal of Matt Gregory's 5,000 mile hike from Bellingham, Washington to Key West, Florida. He left Bellingham on September 1st, 2006. Author's Note: This book is the unedited journal I kept on the hike. Sometimes I went days without seeing a computer and wrote them in a notebook. Once I finally saw a computer, it was usually a mad dash to update each journal entry in a fixed amount of time at libraries, internet cafes, and people’s houses. I made one pass fixing a few spelling errors but decided to keep everything else as is. To me, it keeps the essence of the journal alive. Most journal entries were written in a hurry while I was tired and pressed for time. Thank you for taking the time out to give this a read. I will finish the memoir soon.

Pop Quiz: • Have you ever woken up and felt bad about yourself for no reason whatsoever? • Have you spent time trying to figure out how to get into the popular group at school? • Have you ever been embarrassed by your dad singing in the car with your friends? • Have you noticed that things are starting to feel different than ever before? • Do you change your opinion—or even your personality around different friends? • Do you get overwhelmed with all of the thoughts and feelings bouncing around inside of you? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you passed the quiz. That means you’re a normal girl, who is going through the confusing changes of growing up! Sometimes it might feel like you woke up in a whole new world—kind of like Dorothy, in the Wizard of Oz. The good news is, you’re not alone. Melissa and Sissy, the authors of this book, think they can help you figure out some of the big questions in your life. Even if you haven’t asked them out loud, chances are you’ve started to wonder: • Who am I? • What do I want? • What should I do? • Who do I want to be? While they’re no longer teenagers, Melissa and Sissy remember a bit about what it was like to be 11 or 12—almost a teenager. But more than that, they talk with girls who are a lot like you every day—girls who are feeling confused or overwhelmed, who are feeling like they’re changing in ways they don’t understand—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—and they feel like their lives are out of their own control. In this book, Melissa and Sissy, along with girls your age, will share some insight into what’s going on in your life. You’ll find that you’re not going crazy—you’re just growing up and becoming the person God has created you to be.

Wyoming Road Trip by the Mile Marker

Wyoming Road Trip by the Mile Marker PDF Author: Brook Besser

Book Description
NEW REVISED EDITION that simplifies the highway naming and adds a number of new features that make the book easier to understand and navigate. Contact [email protected] with any questions. Please read this entire description and the notes at the end... Yellowstone National Park is the focal point of Wyoming; however, there is so much more if you know where to look. Hidden gems like badlands and petroglyphs can be found in the plains and valleys, and with 15 mountain ranges over 9,000 ft, Wyoming is hardly the boring prairie that many people envision. Even where the plains seem unspectacular there is a rich history along pioneer trails that served as the gateway to the west throughout the 19th century. This book identifies ALL of this, and is simply a book you should not be without. Most Wyoming travel guides are written to explore a specific subject or location, but it would take a stack of books to cover the state for all subjects. Think of these books as a mile wide and 100 miles deep. This remarkable guide, on the other hand, has most everything in the entire state laid out by the highway mile markers so you will always know what is ahead and exactly how to get there. This book covers National Parks and Monuments, State Parks, sightseeing, camping, picnicking, hiking, historical sites, archaeological sites, rest areas, RV dumps, and general points of interest. The book has over 1900 entries, so think of it as 100 miles wide and 10 miles deep -- enough information to get around, but not an overload of information to wade through. Without a book like this putting together a trip across the state requires a great commitment of time and effort. The author knows this, because he has done it many times. In order to provide massive amounts of information into a book of reasonable size and cost, first off the book, it is not a pocket guide but instead is full A4 paper size measuring 8.3 x 11.7 x 0.5 inches. If this was a pocket guide it would be well over a thousand pages. Secondly, the book is laid out in a clear and concise report style format. The descriptions are brief and to the point and not filled with colorful adjectives. Instead the book uses a simple 5-star "Cool Rating" to convey the author's opinion of the impressiveness of each attraction. In addition, the first two lines for each attraction provide the mileage, GPS coordinates, elevation, which entity owns the land, and a grid system that corresponds to the maps in the book, or can locate the attraction on any map. The detailed directions are also condensed to generally fit on a single line. Just to put a final point on the amount of information in this book, the index is extracted directly from the book itself, and therefore is so comprehensive that it contains over 2,300 entries. So, don't think of whether you should buy this book or that book, this book stands on its own or as the ultimate companion book to any other Wyoming travel book. It will pay for itself many times over in time and fuel savings. If you put it in perspective, the price of the book is around what it costs to operate a vehicle for about 30 miles; maybe 10 or 20 in a big RV -- pretty insignificant. Complete coverage of Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Devils Tower National Monument, Fossil Butte National Monument, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site, Snowy Range, Bighorn Mountains, Wind River Mountains, Sinks Canyon State Park, Guernsey State Park, Glendo State Park, Keyhole State Park, Green River Lakes, Casper Mountain Park, Jackson Hole and much more. NOTES: Because grayscale photos never do justice to things of beauty, the book contains no photos. However, dozens of color photos can be seen on the book website wyomingroadtripbythemilemarker.com.

Fire and Fortitude

Book Description
WINNER OF THE GILDER LEHRMAN PRIZE FOR MILITARY HISTORY An engrossing, epic history of the US Army in the Pacific War, from the acclaimed author of The Dead and Those About to Die “This eloquent and powerful narrative is military history written the way it should be.”—James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian "Out here, mention is seldom seen of the achievements of the Army ground troops," wrote one officer in the fall of 1943, "whereas the Marines are blown up to the skies." Even today, the Marines are celebrated as the victors of the Pacific, a reflection of a well-deserved reputation for valor. Yet the majority of fighting and dying in the war against Japan was done not by Marines but by unsung Army soldiers. John C. McManus, one of our most highly acclaimed historians of World War II, takes readers from Pearl Harbor—a rude awakening for a military woefully unprepared for war—to Makin, a sliver of coral reef where the Army was tested against the increasingly desperate Japanese. In between were nearly two years of punishing combat as the Army transformed, at times unsteadily, from an undertrained garrison force into an unstoppable juggernaut, and America evolved from an inward-looking nation into a global superpower. At the pinnacle of this richly told story are the generals: Douglas MacArthur, a military autocrat driven by his dysfunctional lust for fame and power; Robert Eichelberger, perhaps the greatest commander in the theater yet consigned to obscurity by MacArthur's jealousy; "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell, a prickly soldier miscast in a diplomat's role; and Walter Krueger, a German-born officer who came to lead the largest American ground force in the Pacific. Enriching the narrative are the voices of men otherwise lost to history: the uncelebrated Army grunts who endured stifling temperatures, apocalyptic tropical storms, rampant malaria and other diseases, as well as a fanatical enemy bent on total destruction. This is an essential, ambitious book, the first of three volumes, a compellingly written and boldly revisionist account of a war that reshaped the American military and the globe and continues to resonate today. Book Description
Octogenarian former sheriff Bill Gastner and Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman investigate a puzzling double murder in this twisty, page-turning instalment in the critically acclaimed Posadas County mystery series "If you haven't yet discovered these wonderful mysteries, you are in for a treat!" Anne Hillerman, New York Times bestselling author The morning after his eighty-seventh birthday bash, former Posadas County sheriff Bill Gastner drives past a couple of vehicles stopped on the highway shoulder. It's not an unusual sight: a sheriff's patrol unit, emergency lights ablaze, pulled in behind a pickup truck. The female deputy hasn't radioed for backup. But there's something about the scene that makes him feel uneasy. The next day, Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is called to a rather more dramatic and disturbing roadside scene, with the same truck the star of the show. But this time, its occupant is in no fit state to talk - his dead body stabbed through the chest with a Ka-Bar, a second corpse in the ditch beside the car. What happened to the two men? And what were the dead man and the deputy discussing in the quiet of pre-dawn the previous day? The truth is more twisty and complex than even Estelle and her long-standing friend and former colleague Bill are ready for, and it will take all their combined years of experience to untangle the sorry tale and ensure justice is served. Fans of CJ Box, Anne Hillerman and Terry Shames will love this thrilling, small-town Western mystery set in New Mexico, as will readers who love strong female protagonists and retired sleuthing heroes.
