Book Description
Excerpt from Methods of Increasing Productivity in Modern Grocery Warehouses: Marketing Research Report No. 94 The modern one-floor warehouse has several advantages over the multi story warehouse for efficient receiving of merchandise. Fewer manehours are required to move merchandise horizontally to the storage point than horizontally and vertically as must be done in the multistory operation. The one-floor warehouse also has more dock space for receiving merchandise from common carriers. This results in less congestion around the dock and a more flexible workload schedule. With unit (pallet) load handling, the tons of merchandise handled per man-hour in receiving groceries are more than twice as great as in the shipping operation; nevertheless, receipts must still be unloaded case by case in the rail car or motortruck onto a pallet, conveyor, or handtruck (h-wheeler). For wholesale grocers, the initial cost of case-by-case handling is unavoidable except when merchandise is received by motortruck and the driver places it on the pallets.
