Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir of Rev. Abel Brown It seems due to the character of an individual, who has labored long and assiduously to promote the best interests of his fellow-beings, that his life should be portrayed, after he has ceased to act in his corporeal nature, and when his memory, or the in uence of his life, alone remains, en deared to his friends, and spectre-like to his foes; for, though dead, he yet speaketh. Then let him reiterate the truth in his own words, and let his deeds be recorded as the best evidence of a life devoted to the service of his fellow-mortals, and of his God. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir and Select Remains of the Rev. John Brown, Minister of the Gospel, Haddington IN preparing the following Memoir of my father, it has been no way an object with me to raise a monument to his honour; my great design has been to produce a life which may be useful to the world. The applause of man - the breath of a worm that shall die - he never much cared for while living, and, I feel persuaded, that he now cares less for it than ever, unless it may be as a means of promoting the usefulness of his published works, by which he being dead, yet speaketh. This account book was used by Abel Brown from 1829-1852 for recording daily work activities, likely as a lawyer. There is a survey of a home farm drawn on the front page, with information about dividing the estate. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir of John Brown, D. D An attempt has been made to combine the chronological order of narration with one more topical or systematic, such as the fulness and variety of Dr. Brown's life seemed to demand. But it is hoped that care has been taken so to indicate the exact place of every event thus narrated by anticipation, as to prevent any serious mistake or error. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. Benjamin Goodier Sonnet, To the Memory of Benjamin Goodier. I saw thee once - but knew not then that frame Enshrined a heart so pure and beautiful, Though every light of thought which o'er thee came, Spoke of that truth with which thy soul was full. I saw thee once - and thou wert journeying then In Christian calmness to thy blest abode, And when I asked tidings of thee again, O! thou wert slumbering in the rest of God, Thine early virtues taken - here no more Their mortal bloom shall shed a sweetness round, I tread fair paths which thou hast trod before, And haunt the shades once echoing to the sound Of thy mild tones - O! hallowed every scene, Where goodness such as thine hath ever been!
