Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
The use of membranes is increasing throughout industry, and particularly the water industry. The municipal water industry, which is concerned with the provision of clean drinking water to the population, is a big user and developer of membrane technology which helps it to provide water free of pathogens, chemicals, odours and unwanted tastes. Municipal authorities also have to process sewage and waste water, and membranes are used extensively in these processes. The MBR Book covers all important aspects of Membrane BioReactors in water and waste water treatment, from the fundamentals of the processes via design principles to MBR technologies. Industrial case studies help interpret actual results and give pointers for best practice. Useful appendices provide data on commercial membranes and international membrane organisations. * Major growth area in the water industries * Internationally-known author * Principles and practice, backed by case studies

Membrane Bioreactor Processes

Membrane Bioreactor Processes PDF Author: Seong-Hoon Yoon
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781523107384
Category : SCIENCE
Languages : en
Pages : 411

Book Description
"Preface Membrane technology has been rapidly developed in recent decades to meet various needs from various industries. I was lucky to be a graduate student when the theories on membrane filtration were being matured and countless new technologies emerged in the 1990s. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology was one of the emerging technologies at the time, and it is now one of the most successful membrane processes of all time along with reverse osmosis (RO). I started MBR research in graduate school and continued it throughout my carrier as a research engineer of the LG group and Nalco. I have to admit I have been greatly indebted to everyone who contributed to the advance of membrane technology. Although the knowledge base of MBR has been expanded in the last two decades, the gaps between the leading edge academic research and the practical know-how obtained from the field have also been widened. Hoping to fill the gap, I started to share my experience in the academics and the field through my blog (http://www.onlinembr.info) since 2011. This open-source knowledge sharing was a great success, having more than 200 unique visitors a day globally, almost equally distributed among the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The questions and comments I received were a great source of new information and inspiration. With numerous encouragements from the audiences, I took courage to author this book. The contents in the blog were thoroughly reviewed and modified with additional fillers to make the contents more rigorous and complete. This book is written with an emphasis on the principles behind the scene instead of simply introducing the way MBR works. Chapters 1 and 2 are about the fundamentals of membrane filtration relevant to MBR. Chapter 2 is specifically about the"--

New Horizons in Biotechnology

New Horizons in Biotechnology PDF Author: S. Roussos
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401702039
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 449

Book Description
The practice of biotechnology, though different in style, scale and substance in globalizing science for development involves all countries. Investment in biotechnology in the industrialised, the developing, and the least developed countries, is now amongst the widely accepted avenues being used for economie development. The simple utilization of kefir technology, the detoxification of injurious chemical pesticides e.g. parathion, the genetic tailoring of new crops, and the production of a first of a kind of biopharmaceuticals illustrate the global scope and content of biotechnology research endeavour and effort. In the developing and least developed nations, and in which the 9 most populous countries· are encountered, problems concerning management of the environment, food security, conservation of human health resources and capacity building are important factors that influence the path to sustainable development. Long-term use of biotechnology in the agricultural, food, energy and health sectors is expected to yield a windfall of economic, environmental and social benefits. Already the prototypes of new medicines and of prescription fruit vaccines are available. Gene based agriculture and medieine is increasingly being adopted and accepted. Emerging trends and practices are reflected in the designing of more efficient bioprocesses, and in new research in enzyme and fermentation technology, in the bioconversion of agro industrial residues into bio-utility products, in animal healthcare, and in the bioremediation and medical biotechnologies. Indeed, with each new day, new horizons in biotechnology beckon.
