Prophetic Voices in an Age of Upheaval

Prophetic Voices in an Age of Upheaval PDF Author: Garry E. Milley
Publisher: Clements Pub.
ISBN: 9781894667425
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
What do the Minor Prophets have to say to Christians today? This book of meditations will surprise and delight with its practical instruction and devotional warmth. Garry Milley succeeds very well in convincing us of the value of the minor prophets, and indeed the entire Old Testament, for the modern evangelical's spiritual life. As a Bible College professor, the author combines very effectively the qualities of the scholar and a pastor. He values sound learning which aids in the interpretation of the Bible, but he also writes with a pastor's heart for the laity. "Garry E. Milley is a person of balance and wisdom and writes with theological perceptivity. He is one of the most thoughtful and progressive Pentecostals whom I have had the privilege of coming to know." - Donald G. Bloesch, University of Dubuque Theological Seminary "The Church of Jesus Christ needs to rediscover the messages of the Old Testament prophets. Prophetic Voices in an Age of Upheaval introduces the church layperson to some of the key ideas found in them and it provides a good format for either individual or group study of the Minor Prophets." - Donald A. Leggett, Tyndale University College & Seminary GARRY E. MILLEY is Professor of Church History and Theology at Master's College & Seminary in Toronto. Prior to his teaching ministry he was a Chaplain at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. He has been adjunct lecturer at Tyndale University College and Seminary and McMaster Divinity College. Dr. Milley has published numerous articles for religious papers and was a columnist for ChristianWeek, a national Christian newspaper. His special academic interests are in historical theology and Christian spirituality.

Historical Phases of Prophetic Teaching

Historical Phases of Prophetic Teaching PDF Author: Evelyn Theresa Watson
Publisher: WestBowPress
ISBN: 1490809392
Category : Religion

Pages : 125

Book Description
Historical Phases of Prophetic Teaching is the culmination of the author Evelyn Theresa Watson’s forty years of biblical research that authenticates the Bible’s statutory code of ethics. The code, representing the moral principles of covenant law, judgment, and statute manner, is disclosed in a pattern of doctrinal precepts within metaphoric and parabolic prophecy. This pattern evolved into doctrinal guidelines that appear on the only Bible-based slide rule of its kind, the Mortal/ Immortal Golden Rule of Measure. Volume I consists of a manual with illustrations of Old and New Testament text that show the reader how to use the Ark of the Covenant terms on the ruler to loose the seals of biblical prophecy. The present century marks four thousand years of Judaic Christian history and the end times of biblical prophecy. This recorded time period completes the history of the former Judaic generations and the latter Christian generation in their search for God. However, the search continues for an all-inclusive deity that will unite all nations in the universality of one God. The world's search for a unifying deity will advance when individuals accept the one true God based on Genesis One as the reality of “it was good... and it was so.” The author’s commentary offers the reader an opportunity to become a scholar of honor testifying to the efficacy of scriptural and gospel prophecy.

The Prism of Scripture

The Prism of Scripture PDF Author: Karl Dietrich Pfisterer
Publisher: Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 404

Book Description
Throughout seventeenth and eighteenth century England and New England the historical, doctrinal and prophetical parts of the Bible functioned as the paradigm (Thomas S. Kuhn) of a sophisticated tradition. Through an imaginative and skilful use of this paradigm the New England theologian Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) gave coherence to his critical studies of the Great Awakening, showed the limitations of other contemporary historiographical models and formulated his major program of a historical metaphysics as a resolution of the perennial problem of the one and the many in the thought of the West. By contrast, the Earl of Shaftesbury's (1671-1713) reduction of the paradigm diminished his view of history, impoverished his understanding of tradition and limited his view of nature.

The Lord of History

The Lord of History PDF Author: Jean Daniélou
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Christianity
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
Maintains that history makes sense only when understood as the history of salvation. Shows how the very possibility of history, as distinct from chronicle, arises from the revealed knowledge of God's creative work. Christ, as God entering history, becomes its centre and both judges and illumines it, with consequences for all past and present philosophies. With Christ as norm, the author examines Marxism, logical positivism, existentialism and other secular interpretations of history, and distinguishes between their valid and false concepts. Then, after searching exposition of the Christian theology of history in which God's presence is continuous, he concludes with a section explaining how the Christian, in a sense, not only "experiences" history, but "makes" it. More than an answer for the anxious and a refutation of those who see Christianity simply as one historical stream among many, this book is a commanding invitation for all mankind to take part in history--to participate individually and collectively in the work of salvation.
