Book Description
Leading theoreticians and researchers present current thinking about the role played by group memberships in people's sense of who they are and what they are worth. The chapters build on the assumption, developed out of social identity theory, that people create a social self that both defines them and shapes their attitudes and behaviors. The authors address new developments in the theoretical frameworks through which we understand the social self, recent research on the nature of the social self, and recent findings about the influence of social context upon the development and maintenance of the social self.

Media Effects and Beyond

Media Effects and Beyond PDF Author: Karl Erik Rosengren
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134874553
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 327

Book Description
Addressing a multitude of questions and issues surrounding how we use the media, Media Effects and Beyond represents the results of an international research programme into the use and effects of television, video and music. Seeing the viewer not simply as passive object but as a very active subject, the contributors engage with every aspect of children's, adolescents' and families' use of the media - its character, causes and consequences. Topics explored include media and social mobility; family commumication, and consumer lifestyles. Confronting the two traditions of lifestyle research and effects research, Media Effects and Beyond offers a much-needed reconceptualization of both. Written at a time when traditional European public service media systems struggle against a tidal wave of commercial electronic media, this book will be important reading for students of contemporary culture and communications, as well as media policy for decision makers.

Self Versus Others

Self Versus Others PDF Author: Julie L. Andsager
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135598932
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Self Versus Others explores the third-person effect and its role in media as a means of persuasion. This scholarly work synthesizes more than two decades of research on the third-person effect, the process in which individuals do not perceive themselves to be impacted by particular messages—such as persuaded to engage in risky behaviors or encouraged to be violent—but they believe others will be. Authors Julie L. Andsager and H. Allen White focus their analysis specifically on the role of media and media messages, and assert that the third-person effect functions as a means of persuasion. They explore the underlying concepts and connections this effect shares with established theories of persuasion and mediated communication. The only volume to date focusing on the topic, Self Versus Others demonstrates the significant impact persuasion has on public opinion, behavior, and policy. As such, understanding the means through which persuasion can be accomplished thereby provides a powerful tool. Timely and succinct, this book: *provides thorough synthesis of third-person effect literature; *argues that systematic versus heuristic processing underlies third-person perceptions; and *conceptually links third-person effects with co-orientation. Intended for communication scholars with an interest in persuasion, as well as those in key areas including mass communication, health communication, and political communication, this book is also appropriate for advanced courses in persuasion, communication theory, and campaigns.

Socialization of children and adolescents through media. Influence on identity and self-image

Socialization of children and adolescents through media. Influence on identity and self-image PDF Author: Laura Römer
Publisher: GRIN Verlag
ISBN: 3346597253
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 49

Book Description
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, grade: 2,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: How do media affect the identity and self-image of six to eighteen-year-olds? The goal of this study is to determine whether the Internet and television have an influence on children and adolescents as a means of socialization. "Today, socialization is no longer conceivable without media; it takes place under the sign of an active subject who deals with the media from an early age, uses them purposefully and makes use of them to shape his everyday life, to examine, expand, revise the value and norm structure of his social environment, his personality and life concepts." This statement exemplifies the (ever-increasing) role of media in socialization. Particularly noteworthy here is the Internet, which offers many opportunities for self-expression in addition to research and communication. In addition to the Internet, television is an important medium for humanity and thus also for this study. Often the media use by children and young people is judged critically by scientists. For example, media would have a negative influence on development and are manipulative. However, socialization research hardly deals with the increasing importance of media. Dagmar Hoffmann sees the reason for this neglect in the fact that socialization research is of the opinion that there is no reciprocal relationship between people and the media and that media can therefore not be counted as a socialization instance.
