MIC, which is caused by the activities or metabolites of microorganisms, is a major threat to the oil and gas industry and many other industries. Corrosive microbial biofilms are the culprits behind MIC. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are one of the most investigated corrosive microorganisms because they are commonly present in anaerobic environments containing sulfate such as most oil and gas systems, and they are notoriously corrosive. However, the SRB MIC mechanisms are still not very clear. SRB and NRB (nitrate reducing bacteria) can use “energetic” metals such as Fe(0) as electron donors to replace organic carbon for respiration. Because metal oxidation occurs extracellularly while sulfate or nitrate reduction occurs intracellularly with biocatalysis, extracellular electron transfer (EET) is required. This kind of MIC is known as EET-MIC. MIC can also be caused by corrosive metabolites such as organic acids and H2S that are secreted by microbes, typically with much higher concentrations underneath biofilms than in the bulk fluid. This kind of MIC is known as metabolite MIC (M-MIC).
