Any combination of contact and non contact sensors on a single coordinate measuring machine makes it a multi-sensor or hybrid coordinate measuring machine. The ability to change the probing device without re-establishing the part coordinate system is a significant advantage and consequently the reason for their wide acceptance and usage. In addition to the existing three linear stages in a conventional or hybrid coordinate measuring machine, they are augmented with two rotary stages in order to make them more versatile. Augmenting a conventional or hybrid measuring machine with rotary stages not only complicates the metrology loop but also adds a few more parametric errors to an existing list of known twenty one parametric error terms for a three stage conventional measuring machine. Also different probing sensors in the system have different metrology loops. A literature survey reveals that there are no previous or current work on parametric machine modeling, error evaluation, correction for the same and uncertainty analysis for machines of this class with a wide potential for measuring complex parts quickly and with great ease. The current work focuses on developing a parametric model for a five-axis, multi-sensor coordinate measuring machine of a specific configuration. Measurement techniques for estimating the parametric errors, techniques for compensating the same and methods to estimate measurement uncertainty on five-axis, multi-sensor coordinate measuring machines are proposed. A comparison between the results from error budgeting by the method of constraints for such high precision measuring machines with those from conventional methods based on estimates of subsystem errors are also presented.

The Moore M-48 Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is used to calibrate step gages, ball bars and hole plates. The expanded uncertainty (2 sigma) of the M-48 CMM was determined to be "0.3 + 0.4 L microns (L is length in meters), using the decomposition method. The problem statement becomes, how does one monitor and control the calibration process to ensure that one maintains this level of reliability? Traditional methods of statistical process control, such as X-bar and R charts assume large lot production and are designed to detect changes in the process being monitored. Since calibrations are performed one at a time, with sometimes years between calibrations, standard control charting methodology falls a bit short of what is needed to maintain process capability. Upon examination of the process uncertainty for the M-48 CMM the author finds the following parameters play an important roll in process capability. Since the M-48 uses laser scales, the Edlen equation is used to convert pressure, temperature and humidity to wavelength correction. The largest source of uncertainty comes from temperature effects based on gradients, accuracy of the thermistors and the actual coefficient of thermal expansion of the artifact. The probe calibration, which is performed for each calibration, is another important variable. Since the M-48 CMM's movement is very slow, drift is also an important parameter to monitor. The paper describes the selection of check standards and measurement protocol made.

The inherent variation in any measurement process can be quantified by two widely adopted methods, the Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R & R) and measurement uncertainty. The former uses techniques based on statistical methods while the latter uses a combination of statistics and prior knowledge about the measurement process to estimate the measurement variation. The goal of this project is to develop an internet based software system for evaluation of measurement process variation through a gage R & R study and estimation of uncertainty in measurements. The gage R & R system is a client-server architecture system that aids in the computation of process variation parameters. The measurement uncertainty software system is a three-tier system developed in accordance with the "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurements" (GUM). The software, developed using Java and Oracle, can be accessed across the internet with the help of a Java enabled web browser. As a specific case of measurement uncertainty estimation, a procedure for the estimation of task-specific uncertainty for CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) measurements using computer simulation has been developed. This method involves measuring a virtual part on a virtual CMM (developed from a library of machines, all having a complete description of the machine parametric errors). The various sources of errors are added as modules to simulate real-time measurement conditions. The measurement is repeated over a number of iterations and the results are reported using standard statistical techniques.
