Centered around the legend of drowned maidens, the tale delves into a young man's love affair and his encounters with these spectral beings. In the XVIII century, as young villagers enjoy an evening of song, Levko, son of the village head, longs to marry Hanna. However, his father, who frequently boasts of his past with Queen Catherine, refuses due to his own affections for Hanna. After Hanna and Levko discuss a tragic local legend of a lady wronged by her stepmother and turned spirit, Levko rallies boys to mock the village head in protest. Amidst the turmoil, Levko, by a haunted pond, is given a note by the spirit of the lady from the legend. Upon waking, he presents this note, purportedly from a commissar, which orders the head to allow Levko's marriage to Hanna, leading to an unexpected union blessed under mysterious circumstances.

The title of the story is the name of the Slavic male demonic creature that is the focus of the story. This is a horror novella centered on a seminary student who encounters a witch and must later confront the monstrous entity named Viy. This is one of the first uses of the technique of the grotesque, which was largely created by Gogol and copied (along with tragi-comic surrealism) by Kafka. In Kiev, three students ventured on a vacation, but while seeking shelter, Khoma Brut had a harrowing encounter with an old woman who turned out to be a witch. The experience shook him, but upon his return to Kyiv, he was tasked with praying for a deceased young woman, who was the same witch. Over three nights, Khoma was tormented by supernatural forces in the church, culminating in the summoning of Viy, a fearsome entity. Unable to resist Viy's gaze, Khoma met a tragic end, with his peers speculating that fear was his ultimate downfall.

Oscar Wilde's philosophic novel is templated off of this work, and has a similar point. "The Portrait" is the story of the artist Andrey Petrovich Chartkov, who stumbles upon a frighteningly lifelike portrait in an art shop and is compelled to buy it. The painting is magical and presents him with a dilemma - to struggle to make his own way in the world on the basis of his own talents, or to accept the magical painting's help to guarantee riches and fame. He chooses to become rich and famous, but when he comes across a portrait by another artist that is "pure, flawless, beautiful as a bride", he realises that he has made the wrong choice and he falls ill and dies of a fever. It is a re-telling of a Ukrainian fairy tale.
