Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences PDF Author: Wade H. Shafer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461559693
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Electrospray and MALDI Mass Spectrometry

Electrospray and MALDI Mass Spectrometry PDF Author: Richard B. Cole
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118211553
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 900

Book Description
Discover how advances in mass spectrometry are fueling new discoveries across a broad range of research areas Electrospray and MALDI Mass Spectrometry brings both veteran practitioners and beginning scientists up to date with the most recent trends and findings in electrospray ionization and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry. In particular, this Second Edition highlights how advances in electrospray and MALDI mass spectrometry are supporting important discoveries in new and emerging fields such as proteomics and metabolomics as well as in traditional areas of chemistry and physics research. Electrospray AND MALDI Mass Spectrometry, SECOND EDITION is divided into five parts: Part A, Fundamentals of ES, explains the fundamental phenomena underlying the electrospray process, including selectivity in ionization and inherent electrochemistry, and concludes with a chapter offering a comparative inventory of source hardware Part B, Fundamentals of MALDI, confronts ionization mechanisms, instrument development, and matrix selection, and includes a final chapter that explores the special application of MALDI to obtain two-dimensional images of spatial distributions of compounds on surfaces Part C, ES and MALDI Coupling to Mass Spectrometry Instrumentation, examines the coupling of these ionization techniques to various mass analyzers, including quadrupole ion trap, time-of-flight, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance, and ion mobility mass spectrometers Part D, Practical Aspects of ES and MALDI, investigates analytical issues including quantification, charge-state distributions, noncovalent interactions in solution that are preserved as gas-phase ions, and various means of ion excitation in preparation for tandem mass spectrometry, and offers a guide to the interpretation of even-electron mass spectra Part E, Biological Applications of ES and MALDI, examines the role of mass spectrometry in such areas as peptide and protein characterization, carbohydrate analysis, lipid analysis, and drug discovery Written by a team of leading experts, the book not only provides a critical review of the literature, but also presents key concepts in tutorial fashion to help readers take full advantage of the latest technological breakthroughs and applications. As a result, Electrospray and MALDI Mass Spectrometry will help researchers fully leverage the power of electrospray and MALDI mass spectrometry. The judicious compartmentalization of chapters, and the pedagogic presentation style throughout, render the book highly suitable for use as a text for graduate-level courses in advanced mass spectrometry.

Book Description
The field of mass spectrometry has grown tremendously over the past few decades due in large part to the continued application to new and interesting areas of exploration. The advent of soft ionization sources such as electrospray ionization and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization have dramatically increased the capabilities of mass spectrometry and increased the amount of information derived from biological samples. As a result, there has been tremendous growth in the development of new ionization source technology in recent years. One of the main driving forces behind the development of new ionization technology is for the reduction of sample preparation required prior to analysis, yielding high throughput sample analysis. Demonstrated herein is the development and characterization of an atmospheric pressure ionization source called matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization (MALDESI). MALDESI is a hybrid combination of MALDI and ESI which utilizes laser desorption with electrospray postionization for the generation of multiply-charged ions. Multiply-charged ions are of particular importance when using Fourier transform mass spectrometry, due to the increase in resolving power and mass accuracy with increasing charge on the molecule. Top-down characterization of intact polypeptides is demonstrated as well as high mass accuracy utilizing internal calibration. A newly designed highly robust and versatile atmospheric pressure ionization platform is developed and described in detail. Solid- and liquid state analysis of three out of the four classes of biological molecules is demonstrated utilizing the newly developed versatile ionization platform. MALDESI utilizing ultraviolet and infrared laser desorption is demonstrated at various wavelengths (UV, 337 nm and 349 nm and IR, 2.94 Ã'Âæm and 10.6 Ã'Âæm) with and without ESI postionization for the generation of multiply-charged ions. The characteristics of liquid-state samples are described as a mac.
