Book Description
Excerpt from Masters of French Music The reader who turns to these pages with the idea of finding therein a large and exhaustive account of the composers mentioned, with a technical analysis of their works, will, I fear, be disappointed. My intention has been a far more modest one. The dimensions of this volume would not have allowed me to devote that amount of space to each composer that might be considered due to his merits. The object I have had in view has been to give an account of their lives and to draw attention to the tendencies exhibited in their works. Book Description
Excerpt from French Music of to-Day and Musicians of to-Day The work of M. G. Jean-aubry can thus in no sense be regarded as animated by chauvinism. He is a resolute champion of the free exchange of artistic ideas between all nations, believing that therein lies the surest protection against intellectual domination by any one of them. He is the enemy of all exclusiveness, and has played an active part in arousing the curiosity of his own countrymen in the artistic life of other nations. His book on modern French music represents an accumulation from several years of missionary work. It is far from complete, but he has preferred to place it on record in its present form, the only addition made since the outbreak of war being the first chapter, for which there was an actual need. The appearance of the volume early in the war was due partly to considerations arising out of the war itself, and partly to a very natural desire, with which I have good reason to sympathise, to show that his interest in French music is not of yesterday. Since August, 1914, so many who were hitherto apathetic or even hostile have suddenly declared themselves enthusiastic, that it is really necessary to make some distinction between pioneers and these converts of the eleventh hour. Book Description
Excerpt from Masters of Italian Music No one who ventures to write about modern Italian music can hope to avoid a certain element of monotony. At the present time, and indeed for many years past, music in Italy has meant Opera, and Opera alone. The vast majority of Italian composers devote their best energies to this peculiarly national form of art, while those who cultivate its other branches constitute a minority so insignificant as scarcely to be worthy of mention. In France and Germany Opera has divided honours with Orchestral Music and Oratorio. In Italy it has reigned supreme. In England, except at a few favoured moments, Opera has always been an exotic. At the present time, as a national form of art it is practically non-existent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
