Missouri Marriages Before 1840

Missouri Marriages Before 1840 PDF Author:
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806309857
Category : Genealogy
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This amazing compilation contains the records of 16,000 marriages from fifty-one Missouri counties formed before 1840. The majority of the marriage records in this work were copied from the original marriage books on file in various county courthouses. Others were copied from previously published compilations; some were copied from both sources. All Missouri counties with marriage records prior to 1840 are covered except St. Louis County and City, which have been adequately covered elsewhere. The marriages listed here are arranged in alphabetical sequence by the surname of the groom. A bride's index at the back of the book contains the names of all 16,000 women mentioned in the marriage records.

Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925

Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 PDF Author: Maria Luddy
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108788467
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 463

Book Description
What were the laws on marriage in Ireland, and did church and state differ in their interpretation? How did men and women meet and arrange to marry? How important was patriarchy and a husband's control over his wife? And what were the options available to Irish men and women who wished to leave an unhappy marriage? This first comprehensive history of marriage in Ireland across three centuries looks below the level of elite society for a multi-faceted exploration of how marriage was perceived, negotiated and controlled by the church and state, as well as by individual men and women within Irish society. Making extensive use of new and under-utilised primary sources, Maria Luddy and Mary O'Dowd explain the laws and customs around marriage in Ireland. Revising current understandings of marital law and relations, Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 represents a major new contribution to Irish historical studies.

Gardner, McAnallen, Ralston and Fehrenbach Family History

Gardner, McAnallen, Ralston and Fehrenbach Family History PDF Author: Beatrice F. Mansfield
Publisher: Virtualbookworm Publishing
ISBN: 9781589396708
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
Hearing friends talk about their ancestors and genealogical research prompted the author to wonder about her ancestors and started her on a journey that may never end. With the help of distant cousins contacted on the Internet, it was soon apparent that James Gardner of Butler County, Pennsylvania, was her great-great-great-grandfather. But there the trail grew cold. Where was he born and who were his parents? Was he part of the William and Sarah Gardner family that moved from Maryland to the wild frontier of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, either before or during the Revolutionary War? Most of the descendants of James and Martha "Molly" McAnallen Gardner married, had children and brought many other surnames to the Gardner family tree. Among those surnames are Ackerman, Brinkley, Cameron, Cann, Carson, Dover, Duffy, Fehrenbach, Grossman, Harriger, Hoge, Johnson, Mansfield, Marmie, McAnallen, Mershimer, Ott, Rohrer, Shoaf, Teal, Welsh and Wimer. With the help of more research and information from yet unknown cousins, this family tree will continue to grow and spread its branches. Perhaps we will even learn about the ancestors of James Gardner.

The Papers of Jefferson Davis

The Papers of Jefferson Davis PDF Author: Jefferson Davis
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 0807158658
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 864

Book Description
The five-year period from 1841 to 1846 saw the beginning of Jefferson Davis’ political career. In this, the second volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the documents cover Davis’ unsuccessful race for the state legislature, his selection as a Democratic state elector, his marriage to Varina Howell, his election to the U.S. House of Representatives, and his departure therefrom to assume command of the First Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican War. In the congressional documents Davis emerges as a hardworking freshman representative who quickly won for himself the respect and esteem of his fellow congressmen. There were, however, notable exceptions. One such exception was Andrew Johnson, a tailor by trade, who strongly resented Davis’ remark on the floor of the House that a “blacksmith or tailor” could not be expected to achieve the same results in battle as a trained military man. In the somewhat bitter exchange that followed, some have professed to see the beginnings of the long-standing animosity between Johnson and Davis. The 255 documents in this volume (two appendixes contain undated and late-arriving items) provide a clear picture of Jefferson Davis, the man and the politician, and give an intimate view of Mississippi in the 1840s. Throughout the volume are rumblings of the then distant storm that was to break so disastrously over the nation in the 1860s.

Feminism, Marriage, and the Law in Victorian England, 1850-1895

Feminism, Marriage, and the Law in Victorian England, 1850-1895 PDF Author: Mary Lyndon Shanley
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691215987
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
Bridging the fields of political theory and history, this comprehensive study of Victorian reforms in marriage law reshapes our understanding of the feminist movement of that period. As Mary Shanley shows, Victorian feminists argued that justice for women would not follow from public rights alone, but required a fundamental transformation of the marriage relationship.
