Book Description
Anne Frank’s diary is a gift to the world because of Miep Gies. One of the protectors of the Frank family, Miep recovered the diary after the family was discovered by Nazis, and then returned it to Otto Frank after World War II. Displaced from her own home as a child during World War I, Miep had great empathy for Anne, and she found ways—like talking about Hollywood gossip and fashion trends—to engage her. The story of their relationship—and the impending danger to the family in hiding—unfolds in this unique perspective of Anne Frank’s widely known story. "A historically accurate but relatively gentle introduction to the Holocaust for elementary-age readers."—Miriam Aronin, Booklist "Author and illustrator do not deny Miep Gies’s extraordinary heroism but frame it as a natural response to the events of her life and the depth of her emotional involvement in her Jewish compatriots’ tragedy."—Emily Schneider, Jewish Book Council "A solid, additional title that can serve as an introduction to Holocaust literature."—Kathleen Isaacs, School Library Journal

Book Description
99 simple activities, concepts, encouragements, ideas, tips and tricks that an individual can use (without management approval!) to improve their organization. The original definition of entrepreneurship is "creative destruction." (Joseph Schumpeter, 1942). Famed management consultant Peter Drucker said, "the entrepreneur upsets and disorganizes." This is important to hold in mind when you consider the future of work and the emergent version of your workflows, your culture and your company. The intrapreneur acts in exactly the same way inside the organization as the entrepreneur does out in the marketplace. They seek to move out in all directions, beyond their job title, to change, upgrade, and energize everything, where they can. They do so through experimentation, placing small bets, working collaboratively through networks, with courage and curiosity to the fore. The intrapreneur disorganizes their company. To do so is exciting and fun, but also challenging and tiring. Disorganizers need encouragement, direction, concepts and activities. And this book is here to help: 99 simple tips, tricks, ideas and encouragements that will help you make a bigger difference at work. Guaranteed! Jack Kent

Jack Kent PDF Author: Paul V. Allen
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1496846303
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
Jack Kent (1920–1985) had two distinct and successful careers: newspaper cartoonist and author of children’s books. For each of these he drew upon different aspects of his personality and life experiences. From 1950 to 1965 he wrote and drew King Aroo, a nationally syndicated comic strip beloved by fans for its combination of absurdity, fantasy, wordplay, and wit. The strip’s DNA was comprised of things Kent loved—fairytales, nursery rhymes, vaudeville, Krazy Kat, foreign languages, and puns. In 1968, he published his first children’s book, Just Only John, and began a career in kids’ books that would result in over sixty published works, among them such classics as The Fat Cat and There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon. Kent’s stories for children were funny but often arose from the dark parts of his life—an itinerant childhood, an unfinished education, two harrowing tours of duty in World War II, and a persistent lack of confidence—and tackled such themes as rejection, isolation, self-doubt, and the desire for transformation. Jack Kent: The Wit, Whimsy, and Wisdom of a Comic Storyteller illuminates how Kent’s life experiences informed his art and his storytelling in both King Aroo and his children’s books. Paul V. Allen draws from archival research, brand-new interviews, and in-depth examinations of Kent’s work. Also included are many King Aroo comic strips that have never been reprinted in book form.

Justice on the Brink

Justice on the Brink PDF Author: Linda Greenhouse
Publisher: Random House Trade Paperbacks
ISBN: 0593447948
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
The gripping story of the Supreme Court’s transformation from a measured institution of law and justice into a highly politicized body dominated by a right-wing supermajority, told through the dramatic lens of its most transformative year, by the Pulitzer Prize–winning law columnist for The New York Times—with a new preface by the author “A dazzling feat . . . meaty, often scintillating and sometimes scary . . . Greenhouse is a virtuoso of SCOTUS analysis.”—The Washington Post In Justice on the Brink, legendary journalist Linda Greenhouse gives us unique insight into a court under stress, providing the context and brilliant analysis readers of her work in The New York Times have come to expect. In a page-turning narrative, she recounts the twelve months when the court turned its back on its legacy and traditions, abandoning any effort to stay above and separate from politics. With remarkable clarity and deep institutional knowledge, Greenhouse shows the seeds being planted for the court’s eventual overturning of Roe v. Wade, expansion of access to guns, and unprecedented elevation of religious rights in American society. Both a chronicle and a requiem, Justice on the Brink depicts the struggle for the soul of the Supreme Court, and points to the future that awaits all of us.
