Words bracketed in that text have not been translated. In some few cases they have been indicated in a footnote. I should like to express very fully my great obligations to Mr. Mayor's commentary. My best thanks are also due to him for the personal kindness which he has shown in reading through my translation, and enabling me to profit by his criticisms and suggestions.
