Book Description
This thesis describes the mapping and characterisation of QTLs, in Solanum spegazzinii, that are involved in resistance to the potato cyst-nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida. For this purpose an RFLP linkage map of potato is constructed based on the offspring from non-inbred parents. Phenomena like distorted segregation and reduced recombination that are observed during linkage analysis are discussed. Several QTLs are mapped that are involved in resistance to G.rostochiensis and one major QTL that is involved in resistance to G.pallida. Single point analysis and interval mapping are employed for the localisation of the QTLs. Other quantitative traits like tuber yield and root development are mapped as well. In addition a method is described for the nonradioactive detection of single copy DNA-DNA hybrids.

Potato in progress

Potato in progress PDF Author: A.J. Haverkort
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9086865623
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 366

Book Description
This book contains the proceedings of the Potato 2005 conference, held in Emmeloord, The Netherlands. This conference offered a platform to a diverse group of stakeholders in the potato industry to learn what science has to offer. At the same time it created an environment for scientists to learn what drives the industry in the rapidly changing world of the potato. The contributions in this book reflect the rapid developments both in the industry and in science. The nutritional aspects of the potato tuber are discussed as well as the volatile consumer moods in saturated or new markets. Latest developments in potato breeding and seed potato production are highlighted and these contributions underline how these potato sectors have been revolutionized. The present and future role of decision support systems in managing inputs of nitrogen and water and in managing pests (and thus in making potato production more sustainable) is described. Several innovations in technology development in potato production and storage are illustrated. Experts provide the latest news on crop protection, with a focus on developments in the control of the potato brown rot bacterium and late blight. Finally the trends in potato trade are described. This book shows that the potato crop is progressing globally - with increasing impact on food supply and added value - providing many opportunities for science to meet practice.

Cell Biology of Plant Nematode Parasitism

Cell Biology of Plant Nematode Parasitism PDF Author: R. Howard Berg
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540852158
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
Plant-parasitic nematodes are among the most destructive plant pathogens, causing enormous losses to agronomic crops worldwide. This book provides an up-to-date review of research related to two of the most important nematode pests, root-knot and cyst nematodes. Chapters cover early plant-nematode interactions, identification of nematode proteins important in the establishment of nematode feeding sites, and classification of biochemical and signaling pathways significant in the development of specialized feeding sites in the host. The cellular and subcellular structures essential for the parasitic interaction are examined by light and electron microscopy. Modern techniques of gene expression analyses and genomic sequencing are poised to provide an even greater wealth of information to researchers, enabling them to develop and examine natural and manmade mechanisms of resistance to this important plant pest.

Potato Production Worldwide

Potato Production Worldwide PDF Author: Mehmet Emin Calıskan
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128229268
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 492

Book Description
Potato is a crop grown on all inhabited continents of the globe. It is included in the top five crops of the world, used as staple food in several countries, and the number of people daily consuming the potato may surpass one billion. Despite the high quantities of seed potato produced worldwide, there are yield gaps due to challenges such as abiotic stresses, pests, climate change and poor production practices. A region-wide critical analysis of yield declining factors can help formulate management strategies that can improve potato yields. Bridging yield gaps in potato will ultimately ensure the role of this crop in securing current and future food security. Potato Production Worldwide presents information on this global crop from its history, morphology, and taxonomy to the growth and development of the potato crop, including the latest strategies in addressing today's biotic and abiotic challenges. This book identifies the reasons for yield gaps in various potato production regions of the world, as well as presenting the best production practices, pest management strategies and approaches to deal with climate change from the perspective of potato production. Chapters provide important insights into potato production cultures and approaches in the major potato production countries. Potato Production Worldwide will be a valuable resource for researchers, scientists and students seeking a comprehensive view of successful potato production. - Provides comprehensive information on the origin, history, taxonomy, morphology, ecophysiology, growth and development of the potato - Addresses production practices, including irrigation, nutrient management, harvesting and post-harvest techniques - Explores the impact of Abiotic stresses (drought, chilling, salinity etc.) and their management

The Potato Crop

The Potato Crop PDF Author: Hugo Campos
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030286835
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 524

Book Description
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind’s food security.
