Author: Abraham S.H. Breure
Publisher: PenSoft Publishers LTD
ISBN: 9546427241
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 374
Book Description
The family Bulimulidae is a dominant land snail family in the Neotropics, with more than 1000 nominal taxa described. Revisionary work has only partially been done, but many genera need further revisionary work for which a sound taxonomic basis is needed. Type specimens for more than 400 taxa of this family are present in the Natural History Museum, London, U.K., and are documented in this paper. For each taxon the relevant literature is cited, type locality, label, the provenance of the specimens, and the current systematic position; photographs of nearly all type specimens and labels are also provided.

Snailing Round the South Seas
Author: Justin Gerlach
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780953378760
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
The story of the tree snails of the Pacific Islands spans 250 years of the history of biology as a science. This runs from Captain Cook's first voyage of exploration, through the start of evolutionary theory and the development of the science of genetics. 'Snailing round the South Seas' traces this history through the surprisingly central role played by a group of snails. Ultimately this leads into the struggle for survival in the modern world. Partula snails almost disappeared in the most rapid extinction event known so far and the survivors are among the rarest species on earth. Once more these snails have been at the heart of new developments, this time in conservation biology.
