O presente trabalho procurou contextualizar o manejo florestal em relação ao arcabouço teórico do desenvolvimento sustentável, identificar os vínculos entre essas duas concepções e avaliar suas possibilidades e limites quanto ao atendimento dos objetivos de promover a sustentabilidade econômica, ecológica e social e contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável do setor florestal. As informações foram obtidas através de entrevistas qualitativas com diversos atores sociais e com base nas pesquisas disponíveis sobre manejo florestal para a Amazônia, mais especificamente no município de Paragominas-PA. Partiu-se da hipótese de que o modelo de manejo florestal em florestas públicas de produção constitui-se numa via mais eficiente para gerar benefícios sociais, econômicos e ambientais do manejo florestal, contribuindo para melhorias na qualidade do desenvolvimento do setor florestal. Para verificação dessa hipótese foram realizadas análises comparativas envolvendo três modelos de uso dos recursos florestais: o manejo em florestas públicas de produção; o manejo em florestas privadas e a exploração seletiva tradicional. A análise comparativa qualitativa revelou a superioridade do manejo florestal em florestas públicas de produção em relação aos demais, quando se considerou os aspectos sociopolíticos, ecológicos e econômicos. O resultado da caracterização qualitativa envolvendo 23 relações entre esse modelo e os condicionantes identificados mostrou que 19 apresentaram relação positiva forte, duas foram positivas médias e duas foram negativas médias. Os principais problemas relacionados à não adoção do manejo florestal sustentável estão relacionados aos aspectos econômicos e sociopolíticos. A análise econômica financeira constatou que os modelos predatórios de uso dos recursos florestais apresentaram todos os índices econômicos considerados (valor presente líquido, taxa interna de retorno e relação benefício/custo) superiores aos modelos baseados no uso sustentável, devidos aos menores custos relativos aos modelos predatórios. As causas estão associadas principalmente ao descumprimento dos dispositivos legais, insegurança fundiária, abundância e baixo preço dos recursos florestais, apropriação privada dos recursos florestais e fiscalização e controle deficientes por parte das instituições públicas ambientais.

Community managed forest systems embody a considerable portion of the wisdom, knowledge, and practical skills and management necessary for the sustainability of forest resources globally. These systems, however, are under threat in many ways, including from the rapid rate of change of their political, socio-economic, and biophysical contexts. Adapting forest management sufficiently quickly and effectively to meet these changes is both urgent and very challenging. This Guide introduces criteria and indicators of sustainability for community managed forest landscapes (CMF C&I) as a potential learning and communication tool that can help meet that challenge. Management decisions on appropriate practices and policies regarding tropical forests often need to be made in spite of innumerable uncertainties and complexities. Among the uncertainties are the lack of formalization of lessons learned regarding the impacts of previous programs and projects. Beyond the challenges of generating the proper information on these impacts, there are other difficulties that relate with how to socialize the information and knowledge gained so that change is transformational and enduring. The main complexities lie in understanding the interactions of social-ecological systems at different scales and how they varied through time in response to policy and other processes. This book highlights the sustainability aspects of products and processes in forest science. The forest products sector supplies raw materials to several industrial sectors worldwide. These products can be classified as timber or non-timber products. Wood products are those that originate from the woody fraction and can include pulp, charcoal, firewood, and others. The non-timber products, on the other hand, have the products extracted from the different parts of the tree, such as bark, leaves, fruits, resins, oils, tannins, or even products extracted from non-woody biomass, such as palm heart or carnauba, among others. There are new studies and new products developed from forests worldwide each day. However, studies that evaluate the sustainability of these products and the processes related to their production are not so common.
