Informing Landscape-scale Management of the Greater Horseshoe Bat Rhinolophus Ferrumequinum
Action Plan for the Conservation of the Greater Horseshoe Bat in Europe (Rhinolophus Ferrumequinum)
Author: Roger Ransome
Publisher: Council of Europe
ISBN: 9789287143594
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 64
Book Description
This publication results from a request by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention for action plans to be drawn up for the conservation of two bat species as a contribution to the Euro-Species Programme. (The second action plan concerns the Pond bat (Myotis Dasycneme)). The greater horseshoe bat is widespread in Europe with major declines in its population recorded this century. Both roosts and foraging habitats are threatened. Action has been taken in many of the countries that this bat inhabits and this has at least, stabilised populations. Further conservation plans may vary between the current centres of population and areas of depleted or extinct populations. This action plan gives detailed background to the current knowledge of the status and ecology of the pond bat and how this relates to threats to the species. The plan includes detailed objectives, points for further discussion and possible mechanisms for implementation of the action plan.

Analysis of Wildlife Radio-Tracking Data
Author: Gary C. White
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080926576
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 398
Book Description
With the substantial advances in the miniaturization of electronic components, wildlife biologists now routinely monitor the movements of free-ranging animals with radio-tracking devices. This book explicates the many analytical techniques and computer programs available to extract biological information from the radio tracking data. - Presentation of software programs for solving specific problems - Design of radio-tracking studies - Mechanics of data collection - Estimation of position by triangulation - Graphic presentation of animal migration, dispersal, fidelity, and association - Home range estimation, habitat utilization, and estimation of survival rates and population size

Bats in the Anthropocene: Conservation of Bats in a Changing World
Author: Christian C. Voigt
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319252208
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 601
Book Description
This book focuses on central themes related to the conservation of bats. It details their response to land-use change and management practices, intensified urbanization and roost disturbance and loss. Increasing interactions between humans and bats as a result of hunting, disease relationships, occupation of human dwellings, and conflict over fruit crops are explored in depth. Finally, contributors highlight the roles that taxonomy, conservation networks and conservation psychology have to play in conserving this imperilled but vital taxon. With over 1300 species, bats are the second largest order of mammals, yet as the Anthropocene dawns, bat populations around the world are in decline. Greater understanding of the anthropogenic drivers of this decline and exploration of possible mitigation measures are urgently needed if we are to retain global bat diversity in the coming decades. This book brings together teams of international experts to provide a global review of current understanding and recommend directions for future research and mitigation.
